Vampyre Species in Sphaera | World Anvil

Vampyre

Vrrkrek

Vampyres are a small, semi-volant species of sophont native to the Mauhak subchain in the far east of the Thalassaterrian archipelago. Once the builders of a powerful trading empire, they have long since declined into a reclusive civilization on the losing side of the constant gnollic conquistadorial endeavours.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Slightly over two feet tall, vampyres are vaguely humanoid chiropteran sophonts. Vampyres have extremely flat faces, long spindly fingers, and patagia that connect to the wrist and ankle– the remnants of their ancestral flight capabilities.Their legs are also quite proportionally short, rendering their terrestrial bipedal gait more of a waddle than a walk.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Vampyres are reclusive, and thus rarely found outside the eastern section of the Thalassaterrian archipelago their seat of power being Mauhak.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Vampyres retain the enormous, hypersensitive ears of their ancestors, which facilitate echolocation.

Civilization and Culture

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Vampyres speak a surprising variety of languages, with two major families from different regions of their native range: aozmik and pystixi.

Innate Traits

Fly By Night
Vampyres are one of the only winged sophonts on Sphaera, though only the tengu and faeries can truly fly. You are an excellent climber, and your cape-like patagia allow you to glide extended distances with a L/D ratio of 2, meaning you descend 1 foot for every 2 feet you glide forward.

The Light, It Burns!
You are a creature of the night, adapted for twilight and darkness. Like dwarves, you have poor eyesight and echolocation, but unlike dwarves bright light physically hurts you. If an attack tagged as radiant is made in combat, you take one damage point even if it is not aimed at you.
