Evergrowth Species in Spacial Tangent | World Anvil

Evergrowth

The Evergrowth is a virulent, parasitic organism that has claim large portions of the galactic south. While the Briari Ecumene encountered the species thousands of years ago, they found themselves too late to properly contain the spread. Now, the Briari work to do what they can to buy time until a solution can be found.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Evergrowth is not a carbon or silicon based life form, though is adept at converting life forms of either types to its own. Evergrowth 'biomass' resembles a white, chalky, crystalline substance, though while its outer surface is often like fine dust, it is able to compress its inner layers to become extremely durable, even able to adapt and shift itself to resist various forms of attack.   Evergrowth biomass tends to resemble flowers, vines, and trees, albeit often somewhat geometric, and covered in patterns of light. A flower is often a form of weapon, a vine is used for motive function (either physical or gravitational), and a tree is usually a more structural reinforcement, or power generator. Advanced forms will also open anomalous rifts in their bodies that are believed to be related to energy generation, sensing, and even combat.   Evergrowth bioforms are fluid in form the smaller they are. Ground-based combat forms can rapidly shift to suit battlefield needs, while their massive seed ships are effectively locked in their form.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The largest of Evergrowth bio-ships are noted as having the ability to read quantum information, that is, the basic building blocks of entities in the universe. This makes them particularly adept at detecting attempts at stealth as well as understanding their enemies. How this exactly works is unknown, but the Otrok Imperium has managed to obtain some of these organs, which they have grafted into sensor units called Oracles.

Civilization and Culture

History

The Evergrowth was first encountered approximately eight thousand years ago by the Briari. At that time, they had already consumed numerous star systems to the galactic south, and while the Briari were effective against them, the Evergrowth was able to adapt and were wide spread enough that they could not be dealt with efficiently.   The Evergrowth is believed to have been created by a species native to the galaxy, perhaps as a weapon in an attempt to halt the Great Cycle. However, the Briari have not ruled out that the Evergrowth might be extragalactic, or even extra-dimensional in nature. The Briari are doubtful that a species like the Evergrowth could evolve naturally.
