Briari Ecumene

The Briari Ecumene is an ancient empire of synthetic lifeforms that easily mistaken for natural aliens. An elder race even to the Akhaale, the Ecumene is perhaps the most powerful civilization still active in the galaxy.
Despite their power, the Briari are a humble people. They view themselves as caretakers following the events of the last great cycle. They prefer not to directly meddle in galactic affairs, but are eager explorers and diplomats. Despite their apparent friendliness, the Briari act in mysterious  ways. They often do little to protect pre-spaceflight civilizations, and have been known to suddenly attack other species for uncertain reasons.
The Ecumene makes its home in the Aigaion Complex, a large artificial nebula that seems to block all travel in and out of it by both conventional and fold drives. The Briari would presumably get in and out of the Complex by means of the great hyperspace gate that lays within their domain, and they also seem to be able to control the gateway network in ways other species cannot.
Surrounding the Ecumene is a portion of space known as the "Cradle Region" a region of developing civilizations and vassal states of the Briari. Its unclear if the Briari favor this region for more than being geographically close to them.
