The King of Nordheim
The King is the supreme ruler of Nordheim, charged with leading its armies, forging foreign alliances, and upholding high justice. Though kings were once chosen by consensus from among the High Jarls, the coronation of Hrothvar the I established a hereditary monarchy. His descendant, Hrothvar the III, now sits upon the throne. The King is expected to consult the High Council on matters of war, law, and succession. In rare and extreme cases, the High Jarls may overrule the King with a unanimous vote—an act that has occurred only once in Nordheim’s history. The High Jarls
9 High Jarl Families of Nordheim. The nine High Jarls are the heads of Nordheim’s founding families, each tracing their bloodline to a great ancestor of the city's early history. Their authority is hereditary, and their houses bear ancient sigils carved into the Hall of Lineage. The High Jarls form the High Council, which advises the King and ensures that Nordheim’s oldest traditions and laws are upheld. They oversee sacred sites, strategic strongholds, military pacts, and high justice. In the event of a broken royal line, they are tasked with choosing a new King from among their number. The Jarls
There are thirty Jarls in Nordheim, each ruling over a district, outlying region, or martial order. Jarls are selected through acclaim, conquest, or appointment—usually confirmed by public trials of arms or ceremonial vote. While not always hereditary, many Jarldoms pass through powerful families with deep influence. Jarls enforce justice, oversee militias, manage regional resources, and preside over Seasonal Moots where laws and grievances are heard. Though they answer to the King, most Jarls also owe allegiance to a High Jarl whose house elevated or supports them.Succession and Ceremony
Kingship in Nordheim was once a matter of High Jarl consensus, chosen in a sacred gathering. Since the reign of Hrothvar the I, the crown has passed through his bloodline. However, the High Jarls retain the ancient right to depose a King if they stand unanimously united. Such an act is considered a dire omen.
