Background

Sanctuary is a safe place in a breakinging universe, dedicated to helping its members become Prime.
There is only one parent within Sanctuary and are recognised by their title; 'mother', 'father' or 'parent' depending on gender. They are effectively the leader of the group, have reached a point in their Service where they have achieved Prime and are dedicated to helping others to do the same.

Appointment

There is only one parent at any time within the group. They are appointed once the previous parent has passed from this life into the next. The name of the next parent is recorded by the current parent at the moment of appointment. This is usually kept secret and may be changed at any time throughout the life of the parent.
When the parent dies, their record is unsealed by the older sibilings and the name of the new parent is revealed. This name is almost always that of one of the older sibilings as they are the closest to achieving Prime. Over the history of the position there has only been one time this wasn't the case and that turned out to be a case of fraud, as the older sibilings are identified and elevated by the parent.
In some rare cases, a parent may identify their successor publically prior to their death. This may be so that they can offer them the support they need to reach Prime and so that they can support the current parent.
When a new parent is appointed, they spend the first two days on the Floor of Certitude understanding the words of the prophet. These words include messages from the prophet for new parents so that they may continue the running of Sanctuary.

Role

While the role of parent is understood by many to simply be the leader of Sanctuary, there is a reason that they are referred to with such a familial term.
Everyone within Sanctuary understands that they have chosen to join a new family and leave the old one behind. It is natural, therefore, that a parent should be the one in charge. More than that, the parent must play the part that all good parents should; caring for, teaching, and supporting those under their care and leading by example.
