Luna

Luna is the only moon of Earth, home of the Lunaren people, and first celestial body colonized by the human race.

History

Colonization

The colonization of Luna began in 2107 as an effort to combat severe overpopulation on Earth. While human had been present on the moon in a semi-permanent fashion since 2024, military personnel and tourists were the main inhabitants. Permanent colonization had never been attempted. Using habitat designs taken largely from recently created undersea cities, the first Lunar colony, Aldrin, was established in 2112 with a population of 68 (20 families). The first Lunar child was born two years later.
By 2119 Nubium was established, this colony domed and open to the view of space. Its glow was clearly visible from the surface of Earth and came to be known as the Beacon in the Void. With the first generation of Lunar children coming into adulthood some seven or eight years later, the colonization of Earth’s moon Luna was considered a success. Humanity then began to think of expanding further into Sol System.

While life remained largely peaceful and safe for the colonists of Luna, life on Earth took a turn for the worse as the ravages of climate change pushed civilization to the brink of destruction both internal and external. Wars and invasions from countries losing territory or states fighting for fresh water sources sprang up across the globe. Soon the world’s super powers clashed over energy resources and the entire planet devolved into what would alter be called World War III. The final war that was every country for itself, and it destroyed everything.
As a result of Earth’s dealing with the effects nuclear war, neglect of the Lunar colonies caused a breakdown in the resource supply chain from the planet. Resupply missions were all but stopped by the time the first soybean hydroponics started to malfunction in Nubium. Being the newer of colony settlements it was thought that its equipment would outlast Aldrin, which it did, but as it turned out, the newer organic and organic-interfacing systems hadn’t had time to fully stabilize before being stressed. Aldrin was fast in giving their extra food and equipment to fix the effected systems and increased their production of all foodstuffs. And for a few years it worked, the propped-up systems in Nubium failed at a decelerating rate with less anticipated crop lost each year, and the delivered supplies from Aldrin helped support what else was needed, the two colonies even developed a rudimentary trade system around the transport of those supplies (sending made trinkets and personal supplies for the same from the opposite colony).
The first sickness cases came in 2276 when a family fell ill in their quarters. They were quarantined and their food was originally to blame. It was only after the third new case that medical personnel found the source to be a spoiled water tank, traces of fecal matter had found its way through the cracks in the old water purification system and into the storage tanks. Within the month more than half of Aldrin had fallen to dysentery. Without it’s workforce a cascade of failures destroyed the careful balance of engineering and bio-processes that kept the habitat of Aldrin alive, and in turn its inhabitants. After 32 more deaths the colony of Aldrin was officially abandoned in 2277, its remaining colonies absorbed into Nubium’s population.
Not without its own problems, Nubium immediately felt the strain on resources and space from its now 142 colonists. Nubium’s still unstable system failed to keep up with the increased demand. Starvation followed.
When Earth finally reestablished a connection to the Lunar colonies in 2278 and sent a rescue team the total population had fallen to 19. After repairs were made and new life systems installed, a burial and vigil was held on the grounds outside of the original site of the Aldrin habitat, for the 237 lives lost in the incident. The replacement habitat was named New Aldrin and was only used for a few decades before being decommissioned and scrapped for new building projects.
In 2300 a third colony, Lunokhod, was established and over the next ten years the population stabilized. Relations with the new government of Earth were started on friendly terms, but the memory of being abandoned by their mother planet was never forgotten. The need to be a self sufficient society became a part of Lunar culture.

Independence

The first Lunar city, built on the moon by people who had never known a different home, was completed in 2327 and named New Atlantis. Even though their benefactors on Earth sanctioned the building of the city, they still saw it as a power move from the citizens of Luna. A feeling that only grew as research labs sprang up across the city and technological advancements started coming out of the newly founded Atlantis University. After Lunar propulsion scientist Maude Cliptin developed the Cliptin Propulsion Engine, a reliable deep space propulsion system the path to colonizing Mars.
In the first break from Earth's wishes, Luna builds and funds a Martian colony in secret, using their advantage in engine technology to get supplies and people to the red planet faster than Earth could manage. Unable to afford construction of a full colony, Earth builds a mining outpost on nearby Phobos and hires Martian colonists from Luna’s second colony to work for them off planet, thus increasing tensions between Earth and Luna.
Despite the drain on Lunar-Martian workforces, the colonies grew and prospered, and Earth claimed that Luna being a colony of Earth meant they could not colonize territories for themselves, they demanded all existing colonies and claimed territorial rights to the entirety of Mars. Luna refused. Earth retaliated by blocking travel between Earth and Luna and cut or sanctioned all trade. However, using a combination of black market, and their own artificial resources, Luna is little affected and builds a shipyard out past Mars (near asteroid belt) and establishes military training facilities in the Martian underground habitats.
Earth sets up a blockade around Mars, looking to further hamper Lunar mobility between planets. This causes full political fighting between Earth and Luna, and for the first time mentions and discussions fo Lunar independence are had in political forums, not just local civic centers. Riots start across Mars as Earth military personnel setup outposts on Phobos and Deimos. Martian colonists establish local militias and a provincial government, stating proximity of Earthen and Lunar ships and the increased likelihood of a ground war breaking out near Martian habitats, they needed to take steps to ensure their immediate concerns and safety.
And indeed war did breakout, with the Lunar forces attack on a Earthen outpost near Hellirinn. The Lunar Revolutionary War saw the first fighting between human being on another planet and culminated in the destruction of the Martian moon Phobos by Lunar sovereigntiests. After the war’s end in 2364 Luna was granted full independence from Earthen rule in exchange for full technological transfer and sharing. Shortly after they anounced the creation of the Democratic Parliament of Luna, to be housed in the newly built capital city, Revoluna.
