Sergeant - Astra Militarum

Sergeant is the lowest rank of Senior NCOs that exists in the Departmento Munitorum. Below them there may be a number of corporals, lance-corporals, privates and so on, but upon receiving the rank of sergeant a guardsman/woman will find themselves in charge of a squad of infantry, or the equivalent in their regiment. They gain the authority to issue legal orders, along with the responsibility of ensuring those orders are followed and are regardes as lesser officers by the rank and file of most regiments.

Qualifications

Such is life of a guardsman, the key qualification for any promotion is a slight show of intelligence, the ability to lead- through respect or fear (the choice is the incumbents) and, most importantly, the ability to have survived long enough to be considered a veteran or experienced soldier

Appointment

A person tend to have this rank bestowed upon them by their commanding officer when they try and fill ranks and the TO&E following casualties in battle, however it is not unheard of for a more senior offcier, or even Commissar bestwoing the rank upon someone
The other way a person usually obtains this rank is if they are selected to be part of a cadre for a new regiment beign founded, in which case the adepts of the Depertento Munitorum will issue the promotion

Duties

A sergeant's main role is to manage a squad of 10 soldiers or a tank crew, ensuring their welfare is looked after,thie barracks are clean and that they remain battle ready for when war calls.
On the battlefield, they are the leaders and authority for there charges, interpreting the orders received from above and implementing them as they should. Should a squad fail in thei duties or disgrace the regiment, it is for the sergeant to dish out the punishment, whether its extra duties or even a field execution, for if word reaches a Commissar, it could be them starign down the barrel of a bolt pistol
