Lieutenant

The rank of Lieutenant is used widely across both the Astra Militarum and the chapters of the Space Marines.
ASTRA MILITARUM USAGE
Lieutenant is the most common title in use across the Imperium for Junior Officers in various regiments, but it is by no means the only title used for Junior Officers. It is also used across the Imperial Navy for commissioned officers who have passed their training and have gained enough experience to be promoted from Ensign
In the Kuati land forces, there are three grades of Lieutenant used across the forces. They are:
Third Lieutenant (3LT) This rank is the first rank an Infantryman/Sapper/Driver will receive when they are reaching the end of their training at Officer Candidate School on Sanctuary. Until this point they are referred to as cadet, but are then temprorarily promoted to 3LT when they carry out their field assessment in a combat unit so, should they then take up a place in the chain of command and can give legitimate orders.
On the battlefield they are usually found within the platoon command squad where they can observe their mentor officer to learn how to apply what OCS has taught them and also be observed by the same officer to see if they are worthy of commission
This rank is temporary and supernumery and lasts only as long as the field assessment lasts
Second Lieutenant (2LT) This is the first rank all newly commissioned officers will receive when they pass out of OCS. A Second Lieutenant will be placed in charge of a platoon within a regiment where they will lead 3-10 squads against the enemies of the Imperium. After a suitable time, they may also be asked to mentor a Third Lieutenant.
First Lieutenant (1LT) Every company will have a First Lieutenant who is typically the most experienced platoon leader in the company who becomes the de facto second-in-command for the Company Commander, ready to take over should they fall in battle.
To achieve this rank, an officer would have typically survived many a campaign and has a wealth of experience and battlefield knowledge which gives them the skills and ability to lead multiple platoons in a coordinated operation
ADEPTUS ASTARTES USAGE
Every Space Marine Chapter now employs veteran Space Marines in the rank of Lieutenants, or whatever the Chapter equivalent is, since the rank was re-established after Roboute Guilliman rose again and amended the Codex Astartes.
Typically, every company within a Chapter will have two Lieutenants whom serve under the company commander (typically a Captain) and whom each are given command authority over a demi-company. This allows for more flexibility in a company's deployment and Lieutenants themselves, as aspiring veterans whom the Chapter council sees a potential Captain in, are often given operational command for smaller deployments

Duties

A lieutenant, regardless of grade, will be responsible for the command and welfare of a number of soldiers under their command, ensuring discipline at all times

Accoutrements & Equipment

In the Kuati land forces, a Lieutenant is signified byt a number of pips displayed on epaulettes or shoulder armour- 1 pip indicates a 3rd Lietuenant, 2 pips- a 2nd Lieutenant and 3 pips for a 1st Lieutenant
