Port Verdant
Port Verdant is a harbor town about 80 years old, built along the coast and rising upwards from the docks. It has a population of a little over 30,000 and thrives on fishing, trade, and markets. The town exports fresh fish to the mainland, using magic to keep the catch fresh, and also has a niche industry in pearls.
The town is controlled by Lord Chad Chaddington IV, a wealthy baron who owns most of the fishing vessels and holds financial power over the city. There is also a mayor, but real authority lies with the baron.
The city is divided into step like districts. The lowest part is the Harbor District, known for its dark past as a slaver’s port, though it has since been renamed White Sands. The Market District sits above the harbor, followed by the Common Area, and at the top is the Noble District. A small, run-down fort, Fort Verdant, lies near the Market District, once a militia garrison but now mostly abandoned.
Magic is common in Port Verdant but there are only a handful of individuals capable of higher-level magic. No destructive magic is allowed indoors, and magic that influences thoughts or values is strictly forbidden.
Many homes and government buildings are guarded by stone sentinels, which can be animated to defend the city if needed.
The town worships Umberlee, the goddess of the sea, though most residents fear her rather than love her.
The town is also known as a place where mages can test their skills, in one of the most famous wizard guild in new world, the Veilwardens.
Cockfighting is a popular attraction in Port Verdant, earning the town a reputation.
The city’s symbol is a gray shield with a sextant, representing its role in navigation and trade.
