Water Purifiers
Gem filters known as water purifiers were a commodity before the war. If a village established a constant supply they could purify sea water allowing them to live on the coast far from a fresh water source. This had the added benefit of making new ports for boats and zeppelins to land, each with its own laws or lack thereof. Black markets sprung up as faster as they could be put down, and only because they filters facilitated them.
After the war they are the move desired item, without them crops die and any water slowly poisons the drinker. One plus is that since blight is magic in nature it actually empowers the filter rather than using it up, however is mind or corrupt blight interacts with the filter this is not the case. Mind blight will turn it into a grenade of sorts, and corrupt blight makes them produce blight instead of absorb it.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
The gem takes toxic water into itself and releases pure water without the contaminants. This means they don't last forever and that any water they purify needs to be in a container. They can't clean a lake of blight, but a large one can purge a good 10 gallons.
Manufacturing process
The sapphires must be brought to an enchanter and given the proper enchantment. However this is a rare enchantment and can only be done by powerful enchanters.
Significance
Before the war these allowed new settlements to spring up all along both coasts of Equestria. Without the need for freshwater they were no longer limited to places along rivers or digging wells.
After the war these are the only reason life can survive. The water is now poisonous meaning without these nothing could survive.
