Gem tech
Gem technology, more simply known as gem tech or GT, revolutionized Equestria and launched it into the modern age. Candles were replaced by glowing gems, oil lamps by electricity, cook fires became easily controlled ruby fires, even filters were replaced by gem-based water purifiers. With this boom came a massive demand for more and for newer models, with the only ones able to provide being the Zebra. The Zirix and Xivix embraced the new trade, cities popped up all over the zebra coast as more and more zebra came to make it rich as enchanters and merchants. The Ko Tor were quick to become the vessels that the goods were shipped on, eventually flying the zeppelins that became the new symbols of the advancement. Gem tech went east while bits, raw gems, tools, and herbs when west making both sides richer than ever before.
As the technology spread and permeated every house on both continents many began to worry about their dependence on the other. Zebra feared becoming dependent on the gem supply from Equestria, and equestrians feared being cut off from the technology they now depended on. On a cold day that winter exactly what they feared came to pass, and it took the world with it.
Utility
These have extreme versatility. From personal shields to water breathing to speaking gems for the mute the possibilities are endless.
Manufacturing
The gem must be brought to an enchanter and given the desired enchantment. These are usual zebra enchanters meaning additional gems will be required to cast the enchantment.
Access & Availability
Anyone can buy gem tech, but only experienced enchanters can actually make the items.
Complexity
Most are quiet simple, only requiring a thought, hard tap, or to be crushed to activate the latent power. Nearly all of them consist of a single gem, it make be covered in ornate designs or be set in jewelry but the gem it the only important part.
Discovery
Rudimentary gem technology has existed for centuries however they experienced a renaissance in the years before the war when trade exploded and the demand for new and ever more innovative gem tech grew as well.
