Davan and the Citadel

The town of Davan sits on the eastern foothills of the mountains, just within Chrenada's borders but overlooking The Wakari Coast. The most notable feature of the town today is the Citadel, a tower rising abuptly and somewhat incongruously from the less developed town and surrounding open land.   Davan is primarily an agrarian village now, but it was founded in the heady days of a gold strike. The discovery of precious ore, and at the eastern end of one of the only two passes in the mountains, was nearly too good to be true, and Davan grew up quickly first as a camp and then a town to support the miners and the associated industry springing up to be nearest the precious metal.
Like any boomtown, Davan experienced a lot of wealth, some from miners striking large deposits and more from savvy entrepreneurs setting up shop to serve hopeful miners. With large amounts of gold ore, smelted gold, and business coin, the need was seen for a secure storage location. In addition, there was a fear that outlaws or even Wakari rivals ("they were all pirates, you know!") might seize the town for control of both the gold deposits and the pass. For this reason, the Citadel was constructed.   The Citadel, known today only by its function, has a long ramp beginning in the center of town and leading to the high gate. The ramp offers a gradual, weaving climb, narrow to slow charging armies.   The deposits of gold ore turned out to be smaller than hoped for, and the boom in Davan lasted only about thirty years, including the fading last decade. Centuries later, only the Citadel remains as visible evidence of the town's prosperous beginning, and Davan is a rather scrubby place which supports some traffic through the pass but is less preferred than other settlements.   Today, the Citadel is the primary home of The Gehrn, a cult dedicated to preparation for the all-ending wars. The fortified building in a remote area suits them.
