The Wakari Coast

The Wakari Coast is a country lying to the east of the mountains, growing out of the coastal islands. Its strength is in its extensive trade networks.

Culture

The Wakari Coast, being so heavily focused on trade, appreciates the finer things of life. The arts may be more refined or more discussed than in Chrenada, and the rarity of Ryuven raids means their architecture can be more aesthetic than defensive. Slavery is common, but unlike in Chrenada, slaves may be freed or may purchase their own freedom with funds they've earned, either as a portion of their work for their masters or in hiring out for additional labor.

History

While the Wakari Coast is primarily a merchant country, with an economy rooted almost entirely in maritime and overland trade by merchant houses facilitating exchange among a dozen nations, its history is a bit darker. Great pirate fleets, the most famous of which belonged to Bloody-Neck Jacko, found the coastal islands ideal for both shelter and respite, and they settled first informally and then in towns of their own making. These grew into cities and the pirates turned gradually to legitimate merchant pursuits, giving rise to the merchant houses of today. The greatest of the merchant houses became the royal family, which still does not have the more rigid control of the Laguna line in Chrenada . But the Wakari Coast is wealthy, and this does a great deal to elevate their royal status.
