Muldrotha Wilds in Shadar | World Anvil

Muldrotha Wilds

From a vantage point, the Muldrotha Wilds is an awe-inspiring landscape. Ancient, verdant trees spilled over the towering Hadur Mountains of old Shadar like thick green paint, gathering on the slopes of the foothills and collecting in the valleys between the rocky peaks in dense, dark green thickets. This roiling expanse covers nearly a fifth of the Imperial Fractals and is the largest known forest in existence.   But beneath the verdant canopy it is far less idyllic. The gnarled, massive trees cover the land in a perpetual darkness filled with shadows and monsters. This was the last place cleared of Undead in the Valedori Empire, and to this day it is filled with layers of danger like sediment - from greedy bandits, to monstrous creatures, to beasts of myth and legend.

BANDITS IN THE TREELINE

The wilds provide refuge to many bandits that make camp on the edges of the forest. While the depths of the wilds are not safe for them, they use the trees as a deterrent to hide their camps and often raid along The Sellsword Road and nearby towns like Accorsa Crossroads or Dawnsheath Post. Most of these bandit camps are small and disorganized, though there are rumors of a larger camp called the Free City hidden in the Muldrotha Wilds with connection to revolutionaries in Valedor.

ROVING WEREWOLF CLANS

Vicious hunters who attack any that would enter the depths of the forest, Werewolf packs are the most feared inhabitants of the Muldrotha Wilds. While it is rare that their hunts take them beyond the treeline - these packs can be lethal to even ogre camps and wyverns. Each pack has loosely defined territories that ebb and flow through the wilds with their nomadic hunts. Clashes along these changing borders between packs are not uncommon, and greater clans such as the Ironfang Pack and the Bloodmoon Prowl have been known to war with each other - leaving swaths of forest destroyed in the wake of their bloodshed.   Conflict of this scale is said to be mediated at a place called Wolfrun, or Valtozash in old Tzigani. While no outsider has ever learned its location, it is rumored to be a grove cared for by a Druid Circle that acts as an enclave for Werewolves and is home to the warrior, Olcan Halfclaw.

CREATURES OF THE BLIGHT

A growing danger in the gnarled forest is a corruption of necrotic plants called the Blight. These monsters take on humanoid form or features, infused with magic similar to the Hollow that spurs the Undead. Most attribute this to the effects of the Shadeweave, but scholars visiting Grey's Mooring have theorized a connection to the blood curses left by the Vampire Lord of Castle Ambrose.
