Walking the Darkest Night

Even the most renowned monster hunter needs help once in a while.   Through most of the year, across much of An Gra the only darkness is the shadow of a mountain. But this means that during winter, the long nights are very, very long.   On Darkest Night, the winter solstice, when the sun only rises for a handful of hours, the clan's hard working Song Walkers   are given a respite. Their ceremonial duty to sing through the night to keep evil at bay is taken over by the rest of the clan, allowing them to catch up on their rest. It is the clan's turn to take care of those who take care of them.   Of course this also makes a fabulous excuse for a mid-winter feast.   Bonfires are lit across the mountain slopes (lots of light is a must, especially as more participants become drowsy), and the clans gather around them, down to the last youngling (for as long as they manage to stay awake).   Songs are sung and stories are told throughout the night, accompanied by hot food and warm drinks, and warm company. Anyone who falls asleep during the night can expect merciless teasing for the rest of the winter.   There won't be much dancing at this particular gathering. Walking the Darkest Night is meant to be a more solemn sort of occasion (or at least an effort made in that direction). Emphasis is made on building bonds among the clan and looking forward to the longer daylight hours to come. Everyone is expected to pitch in to make the night a success.   It is absolutely taboo to hold a hunt or a raid on the Darkest Night. A hunt should never supersede one's duty to the clan. Even if one happens to be in a seasonal hunting camp, everyone in the camp is expected to hold their own Walking for the Darkest Night.
