Shadecreature Myth in SanZera | World Anvil

Shadecreature

Auzera's twisted version of Shadebeasts

The following article is no longer canon. While the technical writing is good, it's a pretty poor description of what I was actually going for. A different monstrous being will likely take the Shadecreature's place. For now, I'll keep this article for sentimental reasons and for any curious eyes.

Shadecreatures are fictional monsters used in stories and mythology in Auzera. They are used from everything from ghost stories, to cautionary children's tales, to lullabies. They even appear in certain heroic epics.

Summary

Twisted, shadowy beasts that stalk the line between night and day, Shadecreatures haunt the nightmares of Auzeran children. Depicted as massive, black beings with glowing white eyes, countless teeth, and huge wings, they are viewed as harbingers of death and chaos. Some cultures even believe Shadecreatures to be the very entity of Death.

Historical Basis

Shadecreatures are nightmarish forms of what people who have never been to Sanoris might think Shadebeasts look like.

The concept of a Shadecreature came from travelers that brought back tales of Shadebeasts from Sanoris that were then modified beyond recognition through exaggeration and misinformation. As most Auzeren people believe that all that is good comes from light, it was natural for them to assume that a beast that uses Shade Aura must be inherently evil.

Spread

Depictions, stories, and belief in Shadecreatures is most common in the northeastern Auzera. These people will likely never see a real Sanori Shadebeast in their lifetimes, so the myth of the Shadecreature sounds quite fantastical to them.

Over time the myth has decreased in popularity as communication between Auzera and the northern reaches of Sanoris becomes easier and more common.
