Surgery of the Eye

At the The Glass Knife in Fariweb, the daring doctor Makari has attempted a new innovation. He has cut into the cloudy eye of an elder, removing the white growth of the cataract and returning light to the eye.

The return of the light restored some vision, but very unfocused. Makari's wife saw how glass refracts light and suggested the creation of a focusing device outside the eye. Vision is thus restored by removing the cloudy matter and wearing a thick glass lens to focus the light.

This form of surgery is only available at the The Glass Knife, most of the other The Glass Healers do not yet know it, Makari performs all surgeries personally. He is teaching his most promising students the technique, but with the discovery barely a year old, no one is trusted to wield the knife yet.

Discovery

Makari is a doctor made famous by his use of glass as surgical instruments. With his fine-grained control of his instruments, he created a scalpel so small it is capable of cutting into an eye to remove the white of a cataract. Although this surgery will return light to the eye, vision must be restored by wearing thick lenses made of glass, fortunately also available from the Fariweb Glassblowers.

Makari's mother suffered from cataracts as she grew older and it was an attempt to alleviate her pain and restore her sight that drove him to experiment with the new tools.
