Azure Empire

The Azure Empire is a large maritime empire that stretches across the islands of the Azure Sea, between Vanareon to the east and Ardaling to the west. It is south-west of the Rankan Empire. It is ruled by the Azure Empress, a legendarily ancient blue dragon called Heartswallower, and her daughters. The majority of the population is human or elven. The Azurians are noted sailors and traders.

Structure

The Azure Empire is ruled as a hierarchy of appointed governors of provinces, islands and cities. The most senior governors are normally dragons of Heartswallower's family.

Culture

The Azure Empire is a highly urbanised society, and its cities are hubs of trade under their human-dominated trading guilds. Azure society is quite traditional and rigid. Dragons are revered as divine. Dragonborn tend to be soldiers and administrators. Humans are merchants and farmers.

History

The Azure Empire was founded by Heartswallower in the aftermath of the Sundering, and has been ruled by her ever since.

Azurian coins are widely accepted throughout the known world, and are regarded as of impecable purity - they have never been debased or otherwise reduced in value. All Azurian coins are of gold, their value descending based on size. The gold dragon is the standard coin of international trade exchange. Also available are gold half-dragons, ships worth a tenth of a dragon, and nibs worth a hundreth of a dragon.
