Complex under S.Stefano
On the eastern coast of the little island of St. Stefano, in the La Maddalena Archipelagus, is a military base, the largest part of which is developed around a complex of subterranean tunnels with direct sea access.
The base was built as a navy support base in the '40ies, and used to house the first three solar submarines in forces of the Onfalu's Navy. In 2008 the base has been left to the sole management of the Study Group for Primate - Cetacean Comunication and in particular for the military operations of the Dolphin Special Operation Corps. The base has areas dedicated to the further developement of the d-limba and the training of new recruits on top of serving as base for the D.S.O.C. field operations.
In the last 12 years, the tunnel system that used to house the submarines has been converted and ampliated to serve as training pools and anfibious meeting rooms for the dolphin pod and their partners. What used to be the dock for the support ships has been partially enclosed to form an ulterior external training enclosure and easily defensible gateway for the dolphins and the speedboats.
The surface portion of the complex is a plain cluster of white barracks of unmistakable military fashion, arranged around a small port with three long decks. Two of these decks are now enclosed in a metal and smart glass dome that can hide the operations of the Special Operation Corp, while still providing external condition during training.
The real gem of the base are its subterranean tunnels. Carved directly in the pink and white granite of the island, the complex have direct access to the sea through three completely submarine exits and one partially emerged that leads to the dome. For the entire extension of the tunnels a central basin allows sea water to cover the chambers for a minimum of 2 mt. depth. This is used by the dolphins to circulate freely for the whole of the extension. The channels open up into 6 big interconnected basins, along the walls of which are carved niches and small chambers to store equipment and for the use of the human personnel.
