Hags

Hags are a cursed race of Humans. Long ago, they challenged the trickster god The Traveler to a game of trickery, asking for immortality as their reward. They succeeded in tricking him and were given the promised immortality because of it. However, The Traveler, being a spiteful god, cursed the hags, making them unable to feel positive emotions, and forcing them to work for him for 200,000 years. The hags became cruel bitter tricksters themselves because of this, preying on any that enter their domain and subjecting them to their lies and deceit. While the curse has faded over time, very few hags have faltered from this cruel nature, instead choosing to live alone in their seclusion or with a small coven of other hags.   A hag is not born like other races, as they can not reproduce. Instead, humans will occasionally seek out the aid of a hag, offering their life as their end of the deal. When this happens, the hag may decide to accept the human into their coven by placing their mark on the human's forehead. If both the hag and the human agree, the hag begins an extremely painful ritual known only to the hags themselves. This ritual is said to take 25 years to complete and leaves the new hag exhausted for another 25 years, but offers immortality to the newly fledged hag. Very few humans survive this process, but the few that do become undying members of the head hag's coven.

Naming Traditions

Hags usually keep their names from when they were human, though some do change their names. Hags who change their names take the name from other civilized races.

Major Organizations

While it is very rare for hags to form large groups, The Great Coven is known to be a massive group of hags located in The Feywild, with its numbers estimated to be well into the hundreds.
