Flint of the Malachite Maid is composed of a combination of copper and malachite. While it forms in areas of high magic activity, the rock itself is not magical.

Geology & Geography

Flint of the Malachite Maid is relatively common in the magical areas where it forms (mostly the Forest of Frost and the Mines of the Malachite Maid under the Cherti Mountains. Due to good trade networks between Ketterzan and the Cherti Mountains, it is can be seen relatively frequently in the main Ketterzan cities, particularly Ketterburg and Rynock.

History & Usage

Everyday use

The Flint of the Malachite Maid can be struck against an unattended non-magical wooden item in order to create a spark that can be used to make a fire. At the GM's discretion, depending on the item, this might require a DC15 (or higher) survival check. Crucially, though, the Flint of the Malachite Maid bypasses any restrictions as a result of damp or cold wood, making it particularly useful in wet, humid or snowy climates.

Flint of the Malachite Maid creates a spark that can be highly dangerous in the wooden towns and villages of Ruslavia. Users and carriers should be aware that they could start a huge Fire if they are not careful.

Since Flint of the Malachite Maid will create a spark on any unattended non-magical wood, once a town learns about the substance it is likely to be restricted or banned within town walls. Even if not specifically banned by name, use of the flint could be seen as a violation of a town's anti-arson rules.
