Flamekeeper

The Faith of the Sacred Flame is the dominant world religion, with adherents throughout the realms. Ministering to the faithful are the Flamekeepers. They are the ordained clergy of the church and maintain places of worship. The two most notable Flamekeepers in Drakkenheim are Flamekeeper Hanna who maintains the Chapel of Saint Ardenna in Emberwood Village, and High Flamekeeper Ophelia Reed attached to the Brazen Legion currently based in Camp Dawn.

Career

Qualifications

Flamekeepers are trained in seminaries run by the Faith of the Sacred Flame. Not all Flamekeepers are capable of channeling divine magic, but most learn the rituals to do so.

Career Progression

Flamekeepers usually begin as acolytes. After formal training they are ordained as Flamekeepers. Those who distinguish themselves may rise to the level of High Flamekeeper. The highest rank within the clergy of the Sacred Flame is the Divine Matriarch. She leads the church from her base in the Cathedral of Saint Tarna in the realm of Elyria.

Payment & Reimbursement

Flamekeepers who maintain chapels in the towns and villages across the realms are supported by the offerings of their communities. They tend to live simply and pass along any excess to the church authorities. It is from this supply that militant organizations like the Brazen Legion and their Flamekeepers are paid.

Other Benefits

Flamekeepers enjoy high social status within the communities they live in.

Perception

Purpose

Flamekeepers spread the word of the Sacred Flame, maintain holy sites and places of worship, and minister to the faithful. Some are embedded with the soldiers of the militant arm of the church, while others are glorified bureaucrats who keep the internal machinery of the church moving.

Social Status

Flamekeepers are honored in their communities.

Operations

Tools

Robes (usually white, yellow, and gold), censer, candles, and holy water.

Provided Services

Many Flamekeepers are capable of casting divine magic. Through a combination of divine ritual and alchemy they can also create healing potions.

Legality
Flamekeepers and other clergy of the Sacred Flame enjoy legal protections throughout the realms, but Elyria has become a de facto theocracy run by the church. Technically, the kingdom is currently run by a Lord Regent, but he was appointed by the Divine Matriarch and she could just as easily appoint someone else if he were to disappoint her.
