The Blood Cult amassed a large military force, turning a quarter of Imperial Guard regiments in the sector to their side, along with billions of volunteers. The Cult also has seized the economies of the worlds under it's control, allowing it to uphold said military against the Imperium.
History
The Blood Cult, then known as the Malaxian Dominate, declared their independence from the Imperium in 287.972.M41 under the command of ex-Inquisitor Luther Malax. They desired "freedom from the shackles of Terra's bureaucracy", deciding to go their own path while still worshipping the God-Emperor of Mankind. The Imperium's immediate response was to quash the rebellion, but the Dominate was prepared. For 18 years, the Dominate and Imperial forces fought bloody battles, holding a stalemate for the last year of the war.
At the end of the Battle for Drelograd, a dark plan from the Dominate was revealed. They had set up Warp Aggravators under the major cities, and one was accidentally activated ahead of time in Legium. This activation set off a chain reaction of all the other Aggravators, opening portals all over the planet, killing 99.99% of those on world. The Dominate showed itself to be aligned with Chaos, and renamed themselves to the Blood Cult.
With the death of Luther Malax during the Adur Crisis, the Blood Cult nearly fractured apart. Only Segeric Gaut assuming control out of the shadows kept the Cult in the war, but that was short lived. Once the location of Gaut was discovered, he was quickly eliminated by an Inquisitorial cell and the Blood Cult was decentralized.
Afterwards, the Imperial military spent five years mopping up Cult forces that didn't get the message that the war was over. Some fringe groups live in the holes of society, but the Cult is largely no longer a threat to the sector.
