Professor Zaffai

“Ain't no damn artist in this damn place that's worth a damn“
— Professor Zaffai, Episode 10: The Oriq

Description

Professor Zaffai is in charge of the Band Association and conducts the orchestra whenever there is a play. His anger and spontaneous elemental magic both earned him the nickname “the thunder conductor.” Like Koss, his compliments sometimes leave the recipient with a headache. He also has little regard for paperwork and has problematic views on cultural appropriation.   Though Zaffai was part of the Live-Action Roleplaying Guild when he was a student, he shows little affinity for friendships as a professor. He kicks students out of the room when he’s unsatisfied with their performances, rarely remembers their names (calling most ‘boy’ or ‘girl’ instead), and has his Teaching Assistants run his Introduction to the Elemental Arts class to the point that he doesn’t recognize any students that take it.

Year 1 Involvement

Koss met Zaffai when interviewing for a job in the Strixhaven Performing Arts Society (SPAS). At the time, Koss was advised that there is nothing Zaffai respects more than honesty. Zaffai was immediately taken with Koss, who he claimed was a genius, after Koss played Zaffai a song they wrote. Koss's first assignment for SPAS was to paint a scene to go with their song.   Zaffai was placed in charge of running the winter play, the tale of Lilith, which he considered an antiquated relic. In response he decided to put a liberal spin on it, and an effort to stamp Arcavios on the play and make people think. He initially pictured Koss as the leading person but after Koss's reluctance he instead assigned them to paint the backdrops and adapt the play into a musical.   He made many bold choices in leading Lilith. He wanted the villain to be changed from a Glabrezu to an Oriq despite Captain Dapplewing’s insistence that there was no such thing. He also put only first year students in charge of various pieces, such as Koss, Aurora, and Mistake. He put full faith in them, including listening to Koss’ warnings against casting Quentillius due to his arrogance and racism.   The Owlbear Rampage was the beginning of a nightmare for Professor Zaffai. He fought alongside the Dragonsguard to protect the students who’d been rehearsing, but The Rose Stage was damaged enough to force him to postpone Lilith. Afterward, Captain Dapplewing removed him from the play and put Dean Uvilda Mistcoiler in charge. Zaffai spent weeks in a depression until Koss was able to convince him to still put on his version of the play, even without the stage.   Rosie again enacted a series of protests against yet another widely unpopular decision from the Captain, and eventually, Zaffai was put back in charge and the play went on as expected.
