Mosshall

Nestled between the thick, ancient woods and the winding Tath River, Mosshall has long been a city intertwined with nature. The river, which flows from the heights of Rustpeak, cuts through the dense forest before making its way to Tatharia Capitolina, feeding the city with both resources and vitality. The people of Mosshall have always depended on the river for their livelihood, using its waters for agriculture, fishing, and transportation, while the towering woods provided timber, game, and a natural defense from outside threats.   Before its annexation by Tatharia Regnum in 1113 PE, Mosshall was an independent city-state with deep-rooted traditions tied to the forest and river. Its people were known as expert hunters, trackers, and woodworkers, with their craftsmanship in timber rivaling the metalwork of neighboring Rustpeak. The local religion was deeply animistic, with various forest spirits and river deities venerated in sacred groves scattered throughout the woods. Mosshall had a tradition of ranger-like guardians who protected the city from the wild beasts that roamed the deep forest, as well as from the dangers of the untamed river.   When Icaghor annexed Mosshall, he recognized the strategic value of the city—not only for its proximity to Rustpeak and the Tath River, but also for its untouched natural resources. Icaghor, known for his keen tactical mind and personal affinity for nature, was captivated by the city’s dense forest borders. As a lover of hunting, he often ventured to Mosshall for sport, spending days tracking elusive prey in the wilds that surrounded the city. His love for the chase and the natural beauty of Mosshall became well-known, and his presence there made the annexation more personal for the locals. Icaghor was not seen as a distant ruler; he was a figure who walked their woods and fished their river.   The people of Mosshall, many of whom were weary of the constant threats from bandits and the growing tensions with other nearby settlements, accepted Icaghor’s annexation with surprising ease. His introduction of the Tradition of Health to the region was particularly well received. With many living in isolated pockets along the river and deep within the woods, the Tradition’s focus on community well-being and structured medical care brought security and health improvements the people had never known. Icaghor’s healers established outposts in the woods, providing aid to hunters and farmers alike, and reducing the number of accidents and diseases that had previously plagued the city.   Mosshall’s relationship with the Tath River became even more crucial under Tatharian rule. Icaghor recognized the river’s potential as a trade route and invested in improving river transport between Mosshall, Rustpeak, and Tatharia Capitolina. This revitalized the local economy, allowing Mosshall to flourish as a hub of trade, where timber, game, and fish could be easily shipped to the capital. Small river barges, previously used only for local transport, now carried goods from across the Empire, giving Mosshall a newfound importance within the Tatharian Regnum.   The thick, deep woods that had once isolated Mosshall from the rest of the world were now seen as a treasure trove of resources. With Icaghor’s protection, logging operations were established, though in a careful balance with the forest’s natural rhythms. The people of Mosshall continued their age-old reverence for the woods, and Icaghor respected this, ensuring that the forest was not overexploited. Select areas were designated as royal hunting grounds, where Icaghor and his court would occasionally host elaborate hunting expeditions, solidifying his bond with the city’s leaders and populace.   Mosshall’s annexation by Tatharia also saw the rise of a new elite, composed of local rangers who became stewards of the forests under Icaghor’s rule. These rangers, known as the Woodwardens, were tasked with maintaining the balance between Human development and the wilderness, ensuring that the woods were protected even as they contributed to the city’s growth. They also served as Icaghor’s guides and companions during his hunting trips, further integrating the ruler into Mosshall’s culture.

Infrastructure

Mosshall's most defining feature is its unique infrastructure, a marvel of early Human ingenuity that stands as one of the earliest experiments in Arcology—the blending of architecture and ecology into a self-sustaining urban system. Long before the annexation by Tatharia Regnum, the city had been designed to coexist with the deep woods that surrounded it, rather than displace them. Its founders, recognizing the dangers and beauty of the forest, constructed buildings that harmonized with the landscape. This integration allowed Mosshall to flourish without clearing large swaths of forest, preserving the natural habitat while housing its growing population.   The buildings in Mosshall are tall and densely packed, built upward rather than outward to minimize the city's environmental footprint. Great wooden towers, reinforced with stone and steel from nearby Rustpeak, rise from the forest floor, interconnected by suspended bridges that stretch across the treetops. These elevated walkways allow the people of Mosshall to move freely through the city without disturbing the forest below. The architecture itself is steeped in local tradition, with intricate carvings of animals and forest spirits adorning the walls, reflecting the deep cultural connection the city has with its environment.   Over Time, as Tatharian rule solidified and the Era of Reignition began in 1523 PE, Mosshall embraced the next phase of its evolution. The discovery of Aetherite, first in Rustpeak and later in Mosshall itself, opened the door to a new era of magical technology and infrastructure. The Aetherite Conduit System (ACS) was introduced to Mosshall as part of a grand imperial project, transforming the city from a hidden gem in the forest to a beacon of magical innovation.   The ACS consists of vast networks of crystalline Aetherite conduits, hidden beneath the city's walkways and integrated into the existing arcological structure. These conduits channel raw magical energy from deep within the Aetherite veins, powering a range of advancements, most notably the magical lighting system that now illuminates the entire city. The once dark and shadowy streets of Mosshall are now lit by a soft, otherworldly glow, reminiscent of moonlight filtered through leaves, casting the city in an ethereal light. This magical lighting not only improved the quality of life for the city's residents but also attracted scholars, artisans, and magicians from across the Empire, eager to study the Aetherite technology firsthand.   The Aetherite Conduit System has also provided new opportunities for urban growth, allowing Mosshall to expand its infrastructure without compromising its environmental principles. The conduits power enchanted elevators, moving platforms, and even defensive wards that protect the city from forest beasts or would-be invaders. Unlike traditional cities that might rely on external resources, Mosshall has become largely self-sustaining, its arcological design enhanced by the constant flow of magical energy through the ACS.   Despite these advancements, the people of Mosshall have maintained their respect for the forest and their traditions. The Woodwardens, who had once been the city's guardians of nature, now also serve as protectors of the Aetherite conduits, ensuring that the system remains balanced with the forest's needs. They work alongside the scholars from Tatharia to manage the magical energies flowing through the conduits, making sure that the city’s advancements do not disrupt the natural order.   Mosshall’s arcological experiment, combined with the Aetherite Conduit System, has turned it into a shining example of how Magic, technology, and nature can coexist. As the city continues to evolve, it stands as both a relic of early human innovation and a forward-thinking metropolis in the heart of the Tatharian Empire, where ancient trees share space with magical advancements, and the lifeblood of the Tath River flows alongside the currents of raw magic.
