Beast-Finding Tradition / Ritual in Rivendom | World Anvil

Beast-Finding

The Beast-Finding is the coming-of-age ritual conducted by the Grelk, a Drathan clan who reside in the harsh everwinter of the Frostmere. Due to the harsh environment and temperamental weather, the Beast-Finding is incredibly dangerous even in the best conditions but it can be outright fatal to the inexperienced and ill-prepared participant.

Execution

As the name suggests, the Beast-Finding entails a search. In this case, would-be adults of the Grelk-folk are tasked with heading out into the harsh world beyond the Grelk settlement to seek a quarry worthy of a Seek-Hunting. Under no circumstances are the candidates expected to hunt their quarry on their own. Instead, would-be adults are expected to find a potential target, leave a means to track the beast, and promptly return to camp in order to inform the seek-hunters of a worthy prey.   When the elders decide that a would-be adult is ready to depart on their Beast-Finding, the candidate is given extra rations for a week. They are expected to gorge themselves on as much meat as they can so they will have enough energy in reserve to spend a significant amount of time searching for worthy prey. After a week of preparation, the candidate is seen off by the elders and senior seek-hunters of the clan. They are expected to survive on their own in the wilderness of the Frostmere until they find a titanspawn they think is large enough to be worth the effort, at which point they return to the tribe and the a great Seek-Hunting begins.
