The Shivering Shrimp

Description

Situated on Riverside Road, the Shivering Shrimp is a very popular tavern with local and visiting sailors. The building is made from wood, and is two storeys tall with a veranda runing around two sides. Around back is the kitchen, a tiny herb garden and a shelter for horses. The main common room is quite large and airy, with a long bar taking up most of the back wall and a small stage to the right hand side. The rest of the room is taken up by tables and chairs. Several folding doors lead out onto the verranda area where there are more seating areas.
The decor and furnishings are simple, but well made and maintained. The wooden floorboards are covered in reed mats, to protect them from wear and tear, and there are colourful wall hangings of nautical themes hung between the windows. The place is always kept clean and tidy and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. The smells that waft from the kitchens, make many a passer-by's mouth water.

Origin story

The owner, Kimmel Thorfren, had originally been a fisherman, one day he brought a new kind of shrimp up in his nets. These were rather bigger than normal shrimp and had an odd quirk, they seemed to shake slightly at all times. Later that evening when he was in the tavern telling his friends about his new discovery, a travelling scholar overheard him. He offered Kimmel a small sum of money to take him out to where he had found these unusual shrimp.
Once the scholar had confirmed that these were indeed a new discovery, he offered Kimmel a larger sum of money to keep quiet about the whole affair until he could release his new discovery to the world. Kimmel, realising this new sum would allow him to finally open up the tavern he had always dreamed about, agreed readily. It started out slowly, but two years later he married Vrissa Thorfren, and together they have made the tavern a profitable business.

Food and Drink

Food

The Shivering Shrimp is known for its excellent food and homey atmosphere. Kimmel often experiments with new dishes, but there are a few that have become menu staples due to popular demand.

Fish Cakes - These are made from salted fish, mixed with flour and seasoning, battered and then shallow fried until crisp and golden, served with a hot dipping sauce.

Spicy Shrimp Skewers - large king prawns, marinated in a sweet and spicy sauce then stir fried. Served on skewers with chunks of sweet pepper and avocado.

Shivering Shrimp Special - This is a dish created by Kimmel, which consists of: several types of shrimp and prawn, rice, and vegetables cooked together in a big pot.

Drink

Vrissa has been a brewer for many years, and she has created several of her own rums and ales. Some of the recipes she has sold to other businesses, but some she has kept secret, and they can only be found at the Shivering Shrimp.

Spiced Delight - A dark heavy rum laced with several secret spices, strong and warming. Emphasis on the strong.

Sunset SeaglowA light golden hued rum, leaves a sweet taste on the tongue and a warmth in the belly

Tropical Singer - A light, golden-brown ale with a hint of lime. Perfectly refreshing on a hot day.
