War of the Randles

The War of the Randles was a military conflict fought between the Kingdom of Redoria and the Grand Duchy of Canyndor. The war was declared by the Grand Duke of Canyndor, Grand Duke Tapani VII after he was requested to come to the aid of Matias Torajoki, Lord of Randleton, who saw the King of Redoria as an oppressive ruler who levied unjust taxes and regulations upon his subjects. The purpose of the War was to annex all Redorian territory between the Redcrest Mountains and the Bryn River, a stretch of land commonly referred to as the Randles. This was politically expedient for Grand Duke Tapani VII as not only would it draw the focus of his more malcontent subjects, a victory likely to boost both his prestige and loyalty from his powerful subjects, it would also provide him adequate land from which to directly bribe the particularly troublesome lords in the south of the Grand Duchy.   The War would last for just less than a year, being declared in the winter, the Grand Duke's forces invaded the Randles and made quick progress through the territory. The Duke's forces were heavily comprised of cavalry and relied on quick movement to seize the tactical advantage. The Redorian forces being concentrated around the capital of Halfsburgh struggled to mobilize and meet the invading forces. Local strongholds within the Randles struggled to defend against the Doric forces due to the harsh winter conditions which made holding out against sieges difficult. The Doric forces made good use of livestock to feed their armies while the supplies of the besieged towns and fortifications quickly dwindled. What may have on another occasion proved to be a disastrous decision, Grand Duke Tapani VII's choice to invade in winter had paid off.
