Kilncross

Kilncross is a large town situated near the point where the Pola river becomes a tributary to the Tora river. The town is conveniently located as a trading hub for the region, being one of Doria's most accessible river ports in the region. The town itself is a chartered community, meaning that those who live there are largely self-governing and exempt from many of the general taxes that would be levied by a Surcount or lower class noble, however, the Grand Duke's taxes still apply. Kilncross could derive its name from many origins, one common notion being that its location near the Eaking crossing over the Tora river and the bridge across the Pola within the settlement deriving the "cross" part of the name, while many speculate that the "kiln" comes from the old potteries, some of which still operate there. The town is dense and largely of wooden construction on deep stone foundations, the proximity to the flood plains to the east and the breaking banks of the Pola leading to the necessity for more readily reconstructed designs. The two prominent structures of stone within the settlement are the bridge across the Pola river and the temple to Hatna on the western bank.
