Laethius

Home of the Naera

Located within the Ota/Brel system, Laethius is one of two habitable moons in a horseshoe orbit around the gas giant Corpheus, one of three planets within the sun's habitable zone. Laethius' orbit around Corpheus changes approximately every 7 Earth years, effectively switching places with its twin moon, Idros, due to the moons' gravitation pull. During this time, Idros appears to be rushing toward Laethius as the two moons approach each other, before it appears to stop, remaining still in the sky for a few days, then finally turns and retreats as the two moons move away from each other again. The whole process can last for over one Earth week and is celebrated on Laethius as a romantic holiday.

Geography

Laethius has 2 major continents, 3 minor continents, and approximately 29 islands. The largest major continent is called Orlas. It spans from the north polar region to the south polar region, covering an area just under that of Africa and Eurasia combined.

Orlas has 2 large mountain ranges, the Onoboua Ridge and the Piktou Ridge. The Onoboua Ridge is made up of 9 main mountain peaks and runs through the eastern edge of Orlas, from the north subpolar region to the southern subtropical zone. The Piktou Ridge extends like an arm from the main body of Orlas. It belongs to the Imal people and stretches west from the south temperate zone up into the closest subtropical zone. Piktou is smaller than Onoboua, made of only 6 main peaks. Wayras, the largest lake of Laethius, lies in the west of Orlas, just before the Piktou Ridge, on the edges of 3 different regions governed by 3 different peoples. Five islands sit within Wayras, 3 of which fall into Imal territory, while 2 belong in the southernmost region of Skoynea.

The continent of Zea'ath spans from the north polar region, near the top of Orlas, to the tropical zone, just below the equator. It covers an area similar to that of North America, though is smaller and much different in shape. Zea'ath possesses 3 mountains. Melimere, the longest but shortest mountain, lies in the east of the continent, at the top of the temperate zone. Kesning is the smallest but second tallest mountain, located to the south and slightly west of Melimere, within the subtropical zone. The final mountain, Keelfait, is the largest mountain of Zea'ath, found just below Kesning. All three mountains are the result of the same convergent plates. The area around these mountains is prone to earthquakes, though not as badly as the Onoboua Ridge of Orlas.

The minor continent of Aboya is located to the west of Zea'ath. The tip of Aboya rests inside the planet's north polar region, the continent curving down to end in the tropical zone, slightly below the equator. Elra is the continent's only mountain, located in the northeast of the continent. Due to its small size, however, there is some debate as to whether Elra is a small mountain or a very large hill. In the east, near the base of Elra, is the moon's second-largest lake, Apleth. Due to the supervolcano, Elree, located near the middle of the continent, Aboya is usually uninhabited by sapient lifeforms.

Lying in the ocean between Aboya and the Imal region of Orlas, is Laethius' largest island, Onoa. Onoa is about a third of the size of Aboya and is Laethius' smallest continent. Vaetou is a small cluster of mountains located in the east of Onoa, providing natural protection from rare weather phenomenon such as cyclones.

The second smallest continent of Laethius is Niatias, a group of 6 islands to the west of Onoa and the east of Orlas. Neh'ari and Siafura are the 2 largest islands of the continent. The next largest island is Chenta, which can be found between Neh'ari and Siafura. The remaining 3 islands of Niatias are located to the south of Siafura. Like Onoa, Niatias is within the southern tropical and subtropical zones of Laethius.
