Riku Wei

Riku Wei

This man's life has been elevated to more myth than fact due to Their becoming the Emperor of Shinjuku and the establishment of the Divine Right of Emperors. The clearest recorded facts about Them are Their role as Tsun Wei's adoptive parent, and their ultimate death in the Battle of Kuju. Otherwise, stories range from their mythic-level charisma to equally mythic feats of strength during battle. Very few people knew Them as anything more than a distant concept and figurehead.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

One of many shoguns in a heavily contested region close to modern-day Kuju. His childhood was no different from other shogun children - he was trained in skirmishing, tactics and strategy and primed to one day lead their small band of warriors in the contest for land and resources. How he differed, however, was that from a very early age he viewed the conflict that surrounded him as wasteful. Time and again he watched skilled fighters go out and either fail to return home or come back crippled and useless to provide for their families. He quickly became frustrated by this pattern as all of his favourite teachers died in battle or from infections that would claim them soon after. Not having a stable home with regular access to clean water left more soldiers without limbs that their current knowledge of medicine might otherwise have been able to save. He chafed at what he saw was inefficiency and waste.

Sexuality

At no point in his life did Riku Wei ever commit publicly to a relationship. Not much is known about his proclivity towards romance.

Education

Passed off between the older soldiers and veterans that were too injured to fight. He studied small-scale battle strategies, tactics and weaponry from these people until they died. Consequently his education was full of many styles of leadership and this showed him the value of having more than one perspective before planning an attack.

Employment

As the son of the current shogun of his group, he sat in on battle meetings. When his parents died in battle and left the leading to him, he swiftly enacted his plan to cease the intergroup squabbling. He used his knowledge of his teachers to bond with the generals sworn to him... as well as to eliminate those who would seek to usurp him. Once he had united his small group behind his banner and ensured complete loyalty, he set his sights on uniting the entire region.   He held the position of First Emperor of Shinjuku for half a century.

Morality & Philosophy

Extremely pragmatic, focused on efficiency and reduction of waste/death. This lead him to be overly harsh when raising Tsun Wei, as he wished to ensure that the investment of knowledge and power in this child would not be wasted by their demise. So he put the child through frequent survival drills and had them attend every single war council session, no matter how many hours (or days) they spanned.   He worshiped the Dragon-Gods, and therefore took Huánglóng's prophecy as Law that Tsun Wei would one day lead the Dragons to another realm and assist in bringing those loyal to the elements with him to forge a new world focused on protecting the balance of the elements. This Divine Destiny weighed heavily on his interactions with Tsun Wei, as he was always conscious of his need to positively influence the child.   One of the defining features of pre-Shinjuku culture was an intense distrust and demonization of humans who meddled with the Divine. Divination is the providence of the Dragon Gods and none other, so any human who purported to know the future or have divination magic were distrusted and rejected from the tribe. Their claims were seen as heretical and full of arrogance as they were mere mortals attempting to parrot Divine Acts. Since the child entrusted to him was prophecised by a Dragon God, Riku Wei viewed divination magic as a direct threat to Tsun Wei's life and legacy. He felt threatened by the idea that they would fail in their understanding of his importance and seek to harm his future prospects through their ignorance. This led to an Imperial Order for all people who practiced divination magic to be executed. He did not want to risk them escaping to other regions as they may spread their assumed-to-be poisonous views about his son.   Everything he did from the second he became Tsun Wei's guardian was for that child and their ultimate destiny. He dedicated his life and even his death to the child he was entrusted with.

History

Riku and Choo were close in age and learned from many of the same teachers growing up. Choo idolized his older brother as Riku would listen to him and engage in meaningful philosophical debates which formed the core of their personal beliefs. When Riku began his ascent to Emperor, Choo was his most loyal and dedicated supporter. Choo was Riku's essential right hand throughout his rule, and his only regret was being unable to save Riku in that final battle.
