Vanar
The head and face of the Church of the One True God. The Vanar resides in the Temple of Diavna in the capital city of Ornitha. As his words are to be taken as literally from the mouth of Diavna himself, the Vanar is responsible for crowning the Holy Ornithian Emperor. The Vanar is considered to be an immortal seat through which Diavna speaks; therefore his words are taken as divine scripture, and often written into Ornithian law. When a Vanar dies, the Counsel of High Chaplains meets and through divine inspiration select another Vanar from among themselves as the god chooses his vessel.
Qualifications
One must first be a member of The Counsel of High Chaplains, and their considerations are said to be divinely inspired. In order to become a High Chaplain and sit on the counsel, one must start as a lowly priest and work their way up through the structure of the church.
Requirements
The Vanar must always be male, and can only be of pure blooded human descent.
History
The Vanar Seat began when Aradin summoned the first counsel of High Chaplains of Diavna. Within this counsel Aradin somehow convinced the other High Chaplains of his relationship with the god. He declared himself the mouth of Diavna, who had instructed him to build a church in his name. Together, they reconstructed their various spheres of influence and coalesced into the early Church of the One True God.
The majority of Aradin's time spent as Vanar was spent ensuring the continuation of the title and church after his death. By the time the seat was passed to Ector the Pious, the structure of the church was well established and almost entirely transitioned from denominational worship.
The consolidation into the one religion granted the Seat of Vanar almost total control of the body of the church. With some exception to the High Chaplains, as set out in the first counsel, over the years as the church grew so did the popularity of the Seat as well as the sanctity of the man who held it. At the unvealing of the newly constructed Temple of Diavna, the Church of the One True God was declared the official religion of the city of Ornitha. One month after this passed, Averill the Kingmaker crowned Athelstan the first Emperor of Ornitha.
