2024/04/17: Defending Zyth Part 7 Report
General Summary
Buzz, Knight, Kal'vus, Terana, Zaran
The party took a break to identify and distribute loot. Apparently the jester demon lord was is named Jevethair, and he left behind a full set of major magic items.
Rather than staying on the caravan overnight as was briefly planned, the caravan decided to carry on to the city that night. It arrived a bit after midnight and offloaded then.
Capital city of Ashington. That's where the concert is taking place. It's not the capital of the UWG, but it used to be a capital city of the Continental Union, and it's still considered a capital as a result. There are lots of airfields and a navy.
Miles and the party bid each other farewell, and he told them to keep in touch. This trip would have been a lot harder without them. He told them of people to look out for in the area. The "Black Knights" are the local protectors.
The Black Knights are effectively a part of the military that have retired in the area. They're basically gang warlords, they're just ex-military gang warlords. They ask for protection money, but it's pretty much just taxes. They're known for having mecha.
After some discussion, the party decided to bring Miles in on the details of what they were really doing there. He promised to talk to some military folks he knew and bring them to meet the party the next day or the day after. It should at least let the party get involved without being marked as hostile by the rest of the concert's defenders.
With the caravan ride finished, Terana agreed to spar with Jvalos, who eagerly reciprocated. The military folks directed the two of them to an arena on the beach, with sci-fi jets flying around in the background. A few minutes of sparring ensued, and while Terana getting more swings in, Jvalos was certainly keeping up. Terana recognized that unlike most balrogs, Jvalos was more of a legitimate fighter, having picked up martial arts from a wide variety of places. Upon further analysis, Terana and Knight realized that unless Terana went all-out, Jvalos would probably beat her in a real fight. He was only getting in a couple fewer attacks than she was, and he had the advantage in strength, speed, and toughness.
He really enjoyed fighting her, because it gave him an opportunity to fight someone who's actually on his level. Most of his opponents just go squish.
The sparring lasted for about half an hour before Jvalos bid them adieu. The watching military guys had their jaws dropped. Some even bowed to Terana as she passed afterward.
A military man, apparently a quartermaster, approached Terana where her warrior partymembers were congratulating her. He handed her a card. "Next time, we'll sell tickets."
James sent a message to Terana. Apparently he had uncovered a conspiracy and was in the process of doing something about it. He didn't say what sort of conspiracy it was or within what organization. Apparently it does involve an admiral, a general, and parts of the strategic defense initiative, wherever they may be.
The party finally entered the city. It was large and seemed less run-down than Terragon. An airbase was near the entrance location, and while the landing and lifting fighter jets sounded like normal jets, their engines were putting out hellish red flames.
The only business the party could find that was open at this time of night was King's Chow Mein & Pancakes. It was shaped like a pagoda with a crown on the top, and the appearance and menu suggested it was as if a Chinese restaurant had eaten a Burger King and an IHOP. There were some military guys in the area, and they immediately expressed interest in buying from the party's weeniemobile.
Terana and Buzz got to cooking while Kal'vus manned the register. Kal'vus was able to get a bit of information from the happy troops, but there appeared to be some confusion about the venue. None of them were sure where it would be, and there was apparently some debate still ongoing at the upper levels.
After perhaps a half hour an elderly Chinese lady came out of the restaurant and chased the party out of the parking lot, so they carried on. They eventually found their way to a fairly fancy gas station. There was an older man at the register and a younger lady stocking the shelves.
While Terana tried to buy spices, Kal'vus found a tourist brochure rack. He even found a sort of wooden book that acted as a directory. He found the addresses for a meat packing plant and several grocery stores. The party headed for the nearest of the latter, right in the middle of town.
Kal'vus went into the grocery score accompanied only by one of Terana's snakes (Ava) and an extensive grocery list. He ran into a band of kenku also going shopping. He tried to ask some questions, but he had a very different way of communicating than they did: Apparently these were ghetto kenku. Still, he had some success, and a kenku named Shelly asked if she could get a job at the weeniemobile. She claimed she could cook. Terana decided it was at least worth giving her a shot.
Shelly, her brother, and their friends came to check out the weeniemobile and Shelly's potential employers. Aside from a brief scare after they initially failed to notice Knight, it was an amenable meeting, and Shelly fit in immediately.
The party finished the night in the parting lot, then got a good start the next morning. Shelly served as a valuable guide. Terana started looking for a way to get access to this "internet" thing.
