Three Daughters of Chaos

We are bound by blood and now we will be bound by Chaos. Join me sisters as we embrace the eldest of all forces in our world. In time nothing will stand against us. The Greatest of the Gods will tremble before our might and beauty. We will turn Yeno herself into our slave. Drink from this goblet and feel the power fulfill you.
- From the Three Daughters of Chaos

Summary

During the end of the second age Red Talon and her companions did battle with the Chaos Elves as they attempted to rip apart the fabric of Cadash. During this time, Red Talon encountered three elven sisters that were gathering more and more magical power fueled by Chaos. They were Leshanna the eldest, Tornala the middle and Syllin the youngest.   The sisters pulled from the fabric of darkness, drawing the power into themselves and using it to raise the dead and corrupt others. Red Talon and her companions faced the three women together, and was nearly defeated. In fact one of her companions was slain (different accounts name a different hero).   Red Talon retreated and came up with a plot to separate the sisters from each other and take them down one at a time. The faced Syllin, the youngest in a cavern and were able to “hold her forever in time” (a phrase that has puzzled scholars).   Tornala, the middle sister, was extremely vain and Red Talon used that to bait the sister into a trap. A fearsome battle was fought in front of a hill, until the sister’s “body was reduced to shadow” (another strange phrase).   The eldest sister, Leshanna, was the most dangerous. She had taken over a newly constructed fortress. Some even say that she summoned a dragon to aid in her battle against Red Talon. In the end, the Eldest sister was “entombed within eternity”. Another of Red Talon’s companions was lost.   The story ends with Red Talon lamenting that she was unable to destroy the sisters completely or to cure them. Yeno gifted her with a vision in which she saw the sisters’ power rising again, and the people suffering. Red Talon comments “Perhaps a hero will rise to set this all to right.”

Historical Basis

It is difficult to pin down the actual location for this legend. I speaks of hills, a fortress in a mountain pass and caves. These locations are plentiful in Reluria. Instead some archeologists attempt to find the resting place of the one or two heroes who fell in the battle against the sisters. But this has also proven difficult. The Cataclysm reduced many of the ancient shrines and tombs to rubble and ruin. It is also suspected that these tombs were kept secret so the forces of Chaos could not corrupt them.

Spread

There was a cult of Tornala north of the little Dorian village of Godo. They claimed to have found the resting place of the middle sister and had created a "proper shrine" to the powerful being. Just as rumors of their deeds started to spread, they were wiped out by the elves of Caeden Farne. This incident was all but forgotten when Duke Kadmos invaded the Duchy. Godo pushed that nasty bit of history into the back of their minds when they changed the town name to Priamos.

Cultural Reception

Typically the three sisters are seeing as aspects of selfishness. The eldest represents unchecked ambition. The middle represents unrelenting vanity. The youngest represents willful ignorance. All three can create levels of chaos that injure those around them.   Red Talon and her companions find that all three of these elements together are too much to defeat. But when they isolate each one they are able to defeat them. Usually it is Red Talon’s companions who come up with the plan to defeat the sister. So it is Mek the Learned who figures out how to defeat the youngest sister and her ignorance.   When the tale is told it is to illustrate how those qualities end up doing more harm than good. It also illustrates how dangerous chaos tied to these aspects can be.   While most races of the third age find value and entertainment in all of Red Talon’s exploits, this story isn’t as colorful as some of her other adventures. As such it isn’t as popular as those.   Some elves find offense in the stereotypical vain and ambitious elven characters. They also find the “willful ignorance” of the youngest sister to be a ridiculous concept. Most elves go out of their way to learn and gain knowledge.
