Thedren Silverlight

Hero of Dwarves and Companion to Red Talon

It was to Thedren Silverlight she turned to in this moment of great need. Red Talon knew that the only way to crush this aspect of Chaos was to enter the underworld, but not one of Kor or Yeno’s children knew where the Abyssal Gates lay. But the greatest of dwarves knew, for he had been shown them by Denyo himself. Thedren trusted his companion with the knowledge, but warned her that the journey to the Gates would be more dangerous than anything she had yet endured. Red Talon nodded and asked that he accompany her on the journey. Thedren feared nothing, and with Red Talon at his side they began their journey into the very heart of darkness.

Summary

Thedren Silverlight is the classic dwarven hero upon which all dwarven adventurer’s model themselves. He was a fearsome warrior, brave beyond measure, a loyal friend and enemy of chaos.   His youthful exploits against a tribe of trolls gained him the status of folk hero among his people in the early days of the dwarves. It is said he was one of the first ambassadors to the elves and the humans. He was a level headed dwarf, and said to be a good speaker.   When the Chaos Elves began their plot to corrupt the world, Thedren was already a hero to his people. But when he joined forces with Red Talon, he became a legend.   The two heroes had many adventures together, including entering the underworld and bringing back another hero from the dead. Thedren even adopted Red Talon’s armaments - the axe and shield.   Thedren adventured for years with his companions, but was finally slain in the great battle against the Queen of Chaos at the end of the Second Age.   It is said that Red Talon insisted that Thedren be given the title of Knight of Tyr posthumously when she created the order many years later.   Thedren’s final resting place is unknown. It never was described in any surviving documents.

Historical Basis

Like everything tied to Red Talon, many are certain that the hero existed, but so many source documents and artifacts were lost in the cataclysm that it nearly impossible to prove the accuracy of the stories.   The Dwarven Kingdom of Exur claims to have fragments of his shattered helm in the temple of Denyo, but little else has been found physically.   A fragment of a tablet from the Tyrian empire does describe a dwarf warrior “of silver’s light and goodness” that may refer to Thedren, but scholars in Theos are unable to agree on this.

Variations & Mutation

The famous dwarven scholar Fargrim Rakenkrak has a unique perspective on this hero based on some ancient texts found in the The Grand Duchy of Kadmos. But many northern dwarf scholars do not agree with his findings.

Cultural Reception

Most dwarves find Thedren to be a wonderful role model of the true dwarven adventuring hero. His status has grown over the centuries, leading many to believe that he was an avatar of the god Denyo (even though the legend tells of Thedren meeting Denyo on a number of occasions).

In Literature

The main source of Thedren’s exploits are in The Silverlight Saga. It was composed by a dwarven bard about fifty years after the death of the hero (according to tradition). The actual document no longer exists, but copies do exist. The three dwarven kingdoms to the north have ancient manuscripts of the saga. Most dwarven enclaves have a copy of some kind.   Like most legends of its type it has been retold and revised over the years to include new adventures and characters (and remove and revise lies flattering ones).
