Significance

The Clockwork Dagger to the normal man is not of any significance besides being decorative. To members of the Clockwork and law enforcement it signifies their membership of the Clockwork, an international thieves guild that specializes in human trafficking, and smuggling.
Each member of the Clockwork has a dagger in their possession to allow for admittance into establishments under their control; then there's another dagger that they posses to show their station and specialization. A brass hilt and pommel signifies an Initiate, copper signifies a Member, silver signifies a Veteran, gold signifies a Den Lord, and platinum signifies the Clock Tower the leader of the Clockwork.
No color in the carvings of the blade show that the owner has not chosen a specialization yet, a black color in the carving signifies specialization in stealth and information gathering, a red color in the carving signifies specialization in assassination, a white color in the carving signifies specialization in jewelry and smuggling of gems, a green color in the carving signifies specialization in growing, preparing, and smuggling drugs and alchemical paraphernalia, and a blue color in the carving signifies specialization in human trafficking.
