Kayson Amalgamated Resource Enrichment Network
Kayson Amalgamated Resource Enrichment Network (K.A.R.E.N.) is the largest megacorporation in the world, controlling more than a million subsidiary companies and divisions and employing more than 1.2 billion people world wide, normal and neo alike.
Their most prominent holdings are in the tech, health/pharmacology, manufacturing, staffing and military sectors. Of particular interest is their support contracts with the military of many nations. Due to the influence of the Stability Committee as well as international law, they are restricted from forming their own standing military force but KAREN is still the largest supplier of national armies and provides private power suited security forces for smaller companies and private individuals.
It is possible to trace the initial seeds that would grow to become KAREN start with the Big Tech mergers of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. KAREN was officially established on February 28th, 1991. Originally named Kayson Staff Development, a staffing and training agency. Through a complex series of mergers and acquisitions over the next decade, KAREN had renamed and became the primary holding company for the most complex and robust corporate structure to ever exist by 2010. All of this growth was coordinated and managed by former CEO Rainor Kayson. Rainor stepped down into retirement in late 2010, transitioning control of KAREN to a five person Board of Directors. At this time that Board of Directors is made up of the heads of KAREN's top sectors.
The military sector is broken into two divisions. The Practical Applications Division (PAD) handles manned security services, while the Research and Engineering Division (RED) focuses on R&D for military applications and "problem engineering" and logistics for the Practical Applications Teams.
The PAD is itself further divided into numerous security service companies and military contracting firms. Most of these subsidiaries offer various types of trained Power Suit (PS) forces as either private security or supplementary forces to national armies. The largest of these companies is the Neohuman Tactical Squad.
Originally the NTS was an independent security company founded in the early 80s to provide specialized Neohuman powers and operatives for difficult missions. NTS was acquired by KAREN in the summer of 1999. The NTS has always maintained separate teams for PS troopers and costumed heroes, as many clients have a preference for one or the other.
In 2021, the Costumed Unit became embroiled in a massive scandal involving terrorism for hire, embezzlement, sexual assault, assault, conspiracy, corporate espionage and national treason charges. The scandal (known as the Sweet Suits Suit in the headlines) was so severe that KAREN upper management required NTS to completely clean house for their "heroes". This large initiative saw the termination of every professional hero employed by as well as the majority of the administrative staff. NTS has been very careful in the recent hires and contracts they have extended to new heroes, and rumor has it that they have even recalled a former PS brigade leader from retirement to help ensure that no new scandals develop with this fresh and restructured team.
