After Patrina Duskwalker was spurned by Strahd von Zarovich, her own brother orders her death on the grounds of attempting to share forbidden knowledge. When word of this reaches Castle Ravenloft, Strahd von Zarovich orders his right-hand man to punish them by killing all the women and cutting the ears off the men.
