Construct

The term "construct" applies to a wide variety of things and beings, making an exact definition difficult. All constructs are artificial in some way, constructed you could say, and normally designed for some task or purpose. Early examples were often rough and crude-looking, designed and formed by magic with durability and strength to do the simple tasks their creators deemed unpleasant. As time passed, the demand for more delicate and complicated designs grew ultimately causing the artificers to cross the line from simply mimicking life to actually creating it, leading to "living constructs" like the Warforged. These constructs are usually made with magic, but, in areas like the Demiplane of Dread, other methods such as alchemy or prayer have been found to work as well.   It took a long time, but eventually these new constructs gained a place as one of the sentient races in areas of the Prime Material Plane they resided. However, as the more adventurous types quickly learned, the lands beyond are often much less welcoming of strange machines. While few Outsider Warforged have made their way into the Land of Mists, those "born" in a domain have made little attempts to ease the fears of their flesh and blood neighbors, if not outright stoke them.

Traits of a Living Construct

While their lifeless cousins could toil without rest or food and never register to spellwork as alive, the sentient constructs have some of the markings of natural races, stemming from the soul that formed alongside their free will. Namely, these constructs still require no food, drink, or air, but do often need to rest and re-calibrate, appear as a humanoid instead of a construct to spells, and can even be healed. That said, the younger ones are often better at functioning closer to a flesh and blood creature than the eldest. A newly created Warforged may happily partake in a Hero's Feast with his friends while one of the first of the Created watches from the sidelines, unable to join as his creator never dreamed he would have a soul, much less want to eat. All in all, the large variance in methods, homelands, and available knowledge means living constructs vary more than any other race.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Constructs often take a general humanoid shape to better interface with a world lived in by humanoids. How closely they match an organic race will vary based on what their original function was.

Genetics and Reproduction

Constructs of any kind have no built-in method of reproduction, but some living constructs have been known to become artificers themselves to build more.

Growth Rate & Stages

Once formed, a construct will keep that shape unless damaged to the point of needing a replacement limb or if altered to assist in better doing something.
