After Will chose to continue his training as a Ranger, Halt briefly told him about his father's sacrifice. He never wanted to go into greater detail, fearing that Will would resent him, and blaming himself for his parents' deaths because they had both died saving him. It was years later when Halt told him the full story of how he was the one to bring him to Redmont, including the full story of how his father had saved him and what happened afterward. After Halt told Will the full story they visited his mother's grave at Daniel's Farm.

Personal history
He saved Halt from being killed by Wargals. He was very skilled with a spear, and while wasn't given training with the sword or quarterstaff, he was able to fight with both to good effect. He was described by Halt as having the "speed of a leopard," and was incredibly courageous. He is the only man known to Halt that was able to frighten wargals. He killed several of them all while bleeding from a mortal wound in his side, the first he received, and only succumbing once they had fled before him.
As he was dying he told Halt of his pregnant wife, his final wish being for Halt to take care of her and his son.

By trade he was a farmer, but he was a sergeant in the Araluen Army during the First Civil War.
