Aethyrns Species in Pronathea | World Anvil

Aethyrns

"There are quite a number of wonderous things in the Eight Lands, but when you spot an aethyrn for the first time, you never really forget it. Simply put, they are a sight to behold."
— Editor of Instructions on Insect Interactions

Shimmer

Skittering through the skies, gliding across the winds with ease, one could be easily mistaken to think that these creatures are just a momentary trick of the light or your mind playing tricks on you. Their multiple delicate wings allow the sunlight to filter through them, illuminating the pattern of veins throughout them; none quite the same as another. Their segmented, armoured bodies are covered in an iridescent fur that shifts colour with the direction of the light, causing a near constant shimmering change across their form.   Aethyrns have an almost ethereal nature to them, often appearing as drifting without any real indication of where they might end up. Their large, dark eyes are sensitive to changes in light and colour, allowing it to navigate with great ease, as well as avoid predators and find food. Their long, spindly legs are covered in tiny hairs that let them detect changes in the air around them, such as direction or even if nearby air is being displaced.

Glimmer

While they have no real hive or familial structure, they do ocassionally group up with other aethyrns, making their communication through their antennae valuable to alert others of their species to danger or the sweet nectar that they feed on.   They have been the subject of many a study; aethyrns are almost too well suited for life in the air, and their delicate beauty captures the attention and imagination of those who encounter them.

Reading your critters reminds me of WorldEmber 2022 and the large number of articles you wrote then. It brings back warm and cosy memories. Generally, most of the critters do, unless they are the horrors appearing in places of the deepest dread. Then maybe the chill up the spine is there as well.   For their large wingspan and length they are extremely light. Is there some magic to it, something connected to their affinity to light?

I'm glad you have good memories of my writing! Honestly at times I forget a lot of my own work, so it's nice to know people like it.   As for the aethyrns, it's a little bit of a yes/no situation. Their affinity with light is almost coincidental for them, the way their bodies and their exoskeletons are structured makes them extremely light but extremely durable!

Feel free to check my new world Terra Occidentalis if you want to see what I am up to!

They sound really pretty, though... I think I would prefer to view them from a distance. The mention of their long spindly legs makes my skin crawl. XD

I'm not sure I'd want to be near them either, not fantastic with bugs
