Draco-hybrids

Dragon hybrids are common animals that, through faulty use of Magic, have inherited dragon-like features and skills, such as wings and the ability to breathe fire.
They can have different appearances; some look like a perfect mix of dragons and common animals, while some others are far less majestic.
These creatures also inherited the dragons' hot-headedness.

History

Magic was once available to all creatures without the need of a Magic Shard. However, it was far less predictable and way too aggressive. Dragons, being the creators of this power, were able to further refine it into the art that it is today, but other creatures, with the exception of a few, were unable to properly use this power. As a result, their bodies became corrupted by their own raw magic energy, thus transforming into dragon-like beings.

Upon transforming, most animals succumbed to their lack of control over themselves and their new abilities.

Those that survived were able to reproduce normally, and their anomalies were purified over time, though some of them just became a more majestic version of their predecessors.
Nowadays, these is a nearly-extinct species, with only a few thousands of individuals roaming around the world.

Skills

Even if they aren't as strong as Dragons, they share a few abilities with them:
  • Fire breathing: It can be either blue or orange, depending on whether the animal took after an Infelix or not. Though they are not as skiled as their predecessors, any fire-breathing creature is to be careful around, me thinks.
  • Flight: Unless they're unlucky enough to take after an Infelix dragon. Sometimes the wings won't be big enough to lift the animal, but supposing they have wings, they will always be able to, at least, fly.
  • Magic: Being descendants of the creators of magic themselves, these creatures have the abiloty to use magic. They may not be masters, but some animals have showed great skill.

Additional Information

Domestication

Dragon Hybrids, unlike their parent species, are more often than not a domesticated species. This was achieved thanks to the domestication of smaller breeds of dragons along with that of smaller, non-hybrid animals.

Facial characteristics

The wings tend to take a different appearance so as to look natural in comparison to the rest of the body (furred animals will have furred wings, birds will probably have bigger wings, lizards will have more dragon-ish wings, etc)

Average Intelligence

Some people say that these creatures are able to speak the language of Dragons, but so far it's nothing but a rumor.

Trivia

  • Some Draco-hybrids can have no draconic traits at all, leading others to believe that they are just common animals. However, this lack of dragon-like features does not remove their abilities.
  • Because they are, technically, magical creatures, they do not need Magic Shards to use magic.
  • Being half-dragon does not affect their behavior, apart from their temper.
  • They used to be called Dragon Hybrids. There's no in-world explanation for this, I just thought this name sounded way better.

I love them! Tho this opens a question for me, do magic shards have always been in species or did they appear after the species were "born"? How did dragons manage to make magic available only to species with magic shards?

Thanks! And that's an interesting question to which I have no answer /hj   In all seriousness, Magic Shards are created by, well, Magic Shard Dragons, who are born with them. When dragons noticed that not all creatures were wise enough to wield magic themselves, they took that power from them and put it inside the Magic Shards (which previously existed for ~aesthetic~ reasons).

I like a lot the final trivia... I can tell there's nothing against it neither, so I am happy you got a cooler name. Nice article.

Hi There! really enjoyed the article. I love how it features your own art, which is lovely by the way. The use of a trivia section is quite nice and gives some neat little details for those who want to delve deeper. Well done. Im curious about something here. You say they appear through faulty use of magic? Does this happen when a spell backfires or did it occur during an expiriment? Maybe i misunderstood and it's merely exposure to magic? Regardless of how that works i really like the idea that these part-dragon critters manifested from a faulty use of magic. Thats pretty cool. i look forward to reading more!

Thank you! And yes, it was exposure to magic, which they were not ready for. That and their own misguided use of magic

These draco-hybrids seem super cool! And I like the inclusion of the fact that they may or may not speak the Dragons' language. A great article! I also really like the artwork of this article. It's very pretty and colorful! I wonder what the strangest draco-hybrid to exist ever was or is? Maybe a rat dragon? I don't know, the possibilities seem endless. Great job!

Why, thank you! I really appreciate it   And yeah, the possibilities are endless
