TAW Calypso

Carried 50,000 colonists in cold storage with a crew of 40. The ship was not planned to land, but rather for atmospheric disembarkation, with the crew to pilot back to lunar shipyards.   Most crew members suffered fatal nitrogen emboli on atmospheric entry, with more lost to module depressurisation. Science officer Stan Prang, posthumously awarded the rank of Captain, successfully launched the black box and piloted the craft away from its trajectory, which was the Orcus Patera colony, home to hundreds of thousands. His attempts to save the colony, despite his knowledge of his own inevitable death, were recorded by the cockpit camera. Autopsy revealed he had suffered a nitrogen embolus to his right eye and his right arm was obviously crushed by part of the console.   The craft wrecked at the Marte Vallis instead. The wreck has been preserved as a memorial and as a reminder of the frailty of humans so far from home.
