The Middleton War
INTRODUCTION
The Middleton War was the first bloody war of the 4th period, taking place over 600 years after the fall of The Ithrium Empire. The War lasted over 60 years, and saw the deaths of nearly 150,000 soldiers. The Archian wrath was completed with the killing of three drowic kings: Prillot X, XI, and Hashten, ending one whole line of The Allymar Dynasty. Peace was declared in 4451, at the death of Emeric the Kingslayer. His youngest son Ignis would take the throne, but would die shortly after at the hands of Emeric's nephew, Sephtis.
THE INVASION
In Atember of 4388, King Emeric II of Archia finally took revenge for the political blockade his rival Prillot X had enacted to avenge The Invasion of Tsonlar, which Emeric's father Ignis had foolishly ordered. Emeric had three armies, combining for a total of over 55000 soldiers. The three pronged invasion started on the final day of Blossoming: one army heading for Pruefrost, another surrounding Saelmere, and the third quickly taking the Cursed Vale (what once was Melehur). The initial invasion was a massive success, and Prillot X was forced to lead a full attack on Emeric's 1st Archian Infantry- led by the King himself. Three days before the new year, Emeric cleverly trapped Prillot in a valley and slaughtered his army of 4500 arvenon and drow. Emeric was promptly given the nickname 'Kingslayer', and paraded into Pruefrost in early 4389. The colder months slowed the invasion, but toward the end of 4389, Emeric's armies had met and completely surrounded Saelmere, drawing uncomfortably close to the Tsondalian capital of Lleipae. Prillot's son, Prillot XI, was rushed to ascend the throne, and quickly set about organizing a defense of the critical fortress city of Saelmere.
THE DEFENSE OF SAELMERE
Toward the drawing of Atember 4390, Prillot XI had rallied a force of 13,000 arvenon and drow soldiers to relieve the Archian siege on Saelmere, the important border city-fortress, commonly referred to as 'the gateway to the south'. A great battle took place between Prillot's forces and the 1st and 2nd Archian infantry, on the western side of Saelmere. Despite being outnumbered dramatically, Prillot managed to push back the Archian forces all the way back to their border. However, simultainously, the 3rd Archian Army had pushed along from the Cursed Vale and now marched at a rapid pace on the north bank of the Relloun Channel, heading for the tri-river city of Drivpae. With some pressure relieved from Saelmere, Prillot set to work organzing an army to reinforce Drivpae. If either Drivpae or Saelmere fell- Archia would forever gain a foothold in the south. TURN OF THE CENTURY
At the outset of 4400 4p, the map of Abeon lay in massive turmoil. The Archians had conquered Pruefrost, the Cursed Vale, and all of the northern bank of the Relloun Channel. They had begun pressuring Drivpae, and continued their trade siege on Saelmere, despite suffering several setbacks in their militarial assualt on the city. Meanwhile, Prillot XI worked hard to apply pressure elsewhere in the Archian Empire. The Tsondalian navy had taken the entire Archian coastline up the West Sea; not only beginning to pressure Trouffen, Gazelli, and Riverford, but also stopping all trade from leaving those riverheads. In the east, an arvenon army had assumed seperatist command under orders from Prillot and begun a mass raid on the mountain pass in the Dark East. The citizens of both nations paid the price, with mass starvation and plague outbreaks spreading all over Abeon.
DISASTER AT SAELMERE
Thirty-two years into the war, Saelmere still lay under siege. Pockets of fighting took place around Drivpae and Saelmere, but no major incursions took palce for over twenty years. Fearing an eventual ceasefire and permanant loss of territory, Prillot made a desperate move to try and retake the towns surrounding Saelmere and permantly drive back the Archian siege. Prillot's army marked victory after victory, pushing the Archians back to their own border in the north. However, Prillot XI fell in early 4425, when Emeric's army from the south flanked the arvenon and destroyed the weary fighters. Emeric cemented his title of Kingslayer by personally dueling and killing Prillot in battle. The Tsondalian forces fell back to Saelmere, but ultimately had succeeded in relieving the broken city.
KING HASTEN ALLYMAR
Following the death of Prillot XI, Emeric II wasted no time in reinvigorating his invasion. However, instead of taking the frail defense at Saelmere, Emeric combined his forces and overpowered Drivpae, sealing a place for his army to post in. With Prillot's only son Hashten taking the throne, known throughout Abeon as not the most able-bodied individual, Emeric set to work on plans to invade the final stone in his way of conquering all of Tsonlar- the capital city of Lleipae, just on the east side of the Deepen Mountainrange. Hashten, meanwhile, had a tall task ahead of him- try and defend a falling nation on the brink of civil unrest and collapse, in war that had begun before his birth. Despite his poor health, Hashten had a firey temper and quickly rallied a force of alchemists and soldiers in the deep, marching toward the mountains.
THE LAST STAND AT LLEIPAE
In 4449, King Emeric finally gathered enough of a force to launch a fullscale attack on Lleipae, the capital of the Free Empire. The fighting was fierce around the city, Emeric and Hashten personally meeting on the field- an old and withered Archian King versus the young cripple saviour of Tsonlar. After thirty straight days of bloody battle, the Archians were driven back- but at a heavy cost. King Hashten Allymar, the third King to reign in Tsonlar during the war, was struck and killed by Emeric II. However, Hashten had dealt a mortal wound to Emeric, who would finally succumb to infection in 4451 4p. The defense of Lleipae saved the Tsondalian Empire from utter collapse and ruin, and led to the complete defeat of the Archian Army. Hashten's grand uncle, Prillot X's cousin Crelot, was crowned Crelot V in Lleipae in 4449, and would lead the arvenon army to push the Archians all the way back past Pruefrost. In 4451, upon Emeric's death, the Archian successor, Ignis II, would sign a surrender giving Crelot V and the Free Empire land it had lost to Orsolon over one thousand years earlier. This war marked the end of the golden age of Archia, and the empire would gradually decline until its collapse in 4793 4p.
