You don't join up with a gang to stand out, you join a gang to have a bunch of like–minded idiots tell you that you're smart because you think like they do. Now matter how smart you were now you're part of the collective average, the huddled masses, the gang.   Archie, when a gang grows in number they grow in stupidity and that stupid group will fight hard to keep their ideas going no matter how false and if challenged, they become agitated, dumb and dangerous.   Yeah, sure, you might convince one of them but only a miracle can convince most of them, let alone the whole damn group. Now imagine the gang is the whole human race, Archie. How do you convince that gang to do what you want?   -David M. Curry, former Co-Director of D.A.N.G.E.R(Defunct)
The humans of this Earth do not appear physically to be any different from the familiar mold. It is mentally, morally and emotionally that they differ, humanity is a creature well past their wit's end. They have survived through a Cold War that extended through the 20th century all the way up to the last day of the old millennium and nations that were so focused on the war itself that they turned cold shoulders to the needs of their people. This is a world of morally stained people, regardless of nation, creed or other allegiances.   The people, from the upper echelons and halls of power to the lowest rung of society, nearly universally commit to the thought "It has to come from somewhere" also known as Zero Sum living. It is a deeply cynical idea that states to gain anything someone else must lose something of equal value. The tragedy, of course, is that in this post-industrialization world that is blossoming into fields of super-science the Zero Sum mentality is not only a fallacy but counter-intuitive to solving their problems.

History

During the Cold War of this Earth, the nations of the Warsaw Pact had a few fortunate breaks in their favor, among them the discovery of the REDACTED
super intelligent, mutant bear
specimen, Professor Ursine who would revolutionize the field of HyperTech. With this new technology, NATO allied nations turned more focus towards a resolution with the USSR and it's allies and cracked down on communist behavior at home with greater intensity.   With the governments focused on the war, they were not as focused on the people struggling at home within their borders. Criminal enterprise took a financial blow as their would-be victims had very little to give and so, crime bosses began to invest into local communities and businesses starting in the 50's in deals that evolved from racketeering. For decades, bit by bit, crime went from detestable to a "necessary evil" and finally to a distasteful but ultimately viable option that people could turn to for assistance or employment as an open secret.   In this time corporations became the favored weapon against the spread of communism and in exchange for government contracts and supplemental funds, businesses began catering to a wider, international market and wealthier clientele. It was supposed to be short term but as NATO allies followed America's lead and offered benefit packages and tax incentives to open up within their borders, larger companies did not attempt to wean off this plan. Instead they changed themselves and built around milking as much as they could from it.   That was the status quo for decades. Governments across the world looking outward, keeping the worst offenses and threats from the average civilian like a distant, busy parent. Big business reaching outward for opportunities on the horizon and Crime families acting as a mid-sized government; more impactful than local government but not as powerful as a nation on top of being a dangerous element that victimized civilians from other communities.   It was not until 1999, at the turn of the millennium, that this came to a halt. The USSR was finally dissolved and the NATO allies turned their attention back inward to see how corrupted things had become. Unfortunately, in 2001, terrorist attacks on Moscow, Russia and New York, USA pulled these nations and many of their allies back into another War. The display of military power America and Russia was able to muster for this conflict, speaking frankly, scared other nations including allies.   The next decade would see America trying to clean up relations and assuage those feelings of fear and envy from allies while haphazardly trying to regain the trust of their own people. Internal structure was re-examined and excess agencies began to be shut down while old contracts were reviewed. There was failure on all levels and it would take time to fix the mess.   The people of today are not used to government interference or support on a national level. “I can live with that” is a phrase to punctuate the decisions of a person's life; for some it is because they aren’t willing to live with the choices they would need to make to live a better life. Others are content in the number of broken they will leave in their wake on their march for more.

The idea of the "Zero-Sum Game" that you put in this is very interesting (and goes back to my International Bacculerate days in High School)   What I think you should expand on is what Homo Sapiens Sapiens do in your world that is different that other worlds. Maybe explain the current state of humanity and what's going on. (I might just be a poor reader though.)

I hope that you will take the time to review the changes that have been made to this article and hopefully it will no alleviate any confusion.

Well, that was a different sort of read. I didn't quite get a feel for what the purpose of this article was. It's a species template but feels more like prose. I guess as the reader I'm a bit at a loss from what my takeaway is from this. The random blurb with the anatomy of humans was a bit out of place as well given the opinonated nature of the article itself. Is there a bit of information specifically that we were supposed to take from it?

The dramatic tone was definitely noticed. Though be careful about overusing quotes. At a certain point, it makes the conversation at hand morph into something else. An abundance of them feels like mocking in a sense. I guess this goes back to my earlier question of the purpose of the piece.

A point for header and quote, but style goes a long way! Use it to engage your reader and further add to your point.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm still a little confused about this article. I didn't feel like it really added to your world or gave me a sense of that world. The use of quotes is a bit much for my taste personally.

Tikal's Grading Criteria
Content: What is the substance of the article like? Did it draw me in? Did it explain what I needed to know to understand it? Proper formatting to induce reading is included.
Technique: The actual technique of the writing. How well written is it? Extra points for style. English as a Second Language is taken into consideration
Style: How well did you use the World Anvil features and BBCODE to layout your world. Does it give me a feel for your world and its context?
Every article starts up with at least one point and scales upward as I read. There's no real maximum, however, the more I read your work the sharper the curve will be.

I hope that you will look back on this article and share if I have made adequate improvement for understanding. If not, I understand and thank you for the original look through.

Heh, the first quote reminds me of men in black. "A person is smart. People are stupid." -- Agent K   I would actually argue that most people don't believe life is a zero sum game. Even capitalism, while emphasizing competition, also drives cooperation through the division of labor to those who can most efficiently perform a task or create a product. East Asian societies are also a good deal more community minded than individualistic Western nations. Unless this world is significantly different from modern Earth, I think this is a pretty broad oversimplification. Fun read though.

I hope that you will give this article another look through and hopefully I have done a better job conveying the information you need to make certain things clear.

Thats a pretty clear explanation now. Is this more or less an explanation of real history from your point of view? You seem to have some pretty strong opinions on the state of the world and the cause of its problems.

Oct 10, 2018 03:19

This is an explanation for the state of the world of this story, any likeness to governments and worlds, real or fiction is purely coincidental.

Oct 10, 2018 03:21

Ah, my mistake. It does seem to very closely parallel our history though. Is there a point at which the timelines diverge, or are the worlds fundamentally different?

Oct 10, 2018 19:05

No problem, I took a very exaggerated look at modern history, the world today and people from the genres of cyberpunk and Star Trek. As for the diverging points here are a number of the:

super intelligent, specimen bear, Professor Ursine who would revolutionize the field of HyperTech.
To my knowledge there wasn’t a super intelligent bear working for the USSR during the cold war.
It was not until 1999, at the turn of the millennium, that this came to a halt. The USSR was finally dissolved
In this world the Cold war lasted an extra decade, ending in 1999 instead of 1989. Prolonging the negative effects of the war.
Unfortunately, in 2001, terrorist attacks on Moscow, Russia and New York, USA pulled these nations and many of their allies back into another War.
Terrorists mounted a coordinated attack against America and Russia, bringing the two super powers and their allies back to war but now against terrorism.
