Stalwold Forest (Stall-Wool-duh)

The Stalwold forest is the most hospitale ecosystem on the otherwise frozen northern continent. Being many degrees farther south the land has some heat to work with. The dense fjords of the land provide little else.

Geography

Huge cliffs and forested mountains plungs at sharp angles into the semi cold oceans of the shallow north. Rivers, waterfalls, rock falls, and rain coat the regions coasts. Inland one may find plateus and inlets at the end of rivers and along the Fjords where more stable land exists.   The northern edge of ther egion quickly freezes and loses signs of life.

Ecosystem

A sparse system of large hibernation based predators hunt the snowy cold ready prey. The dense forests find their spaces between the sharp rock and high altitudes. Most creatures here are carnivores for there is not nearly as much plant life as the southern continent. What plant life there is, remains tough, solid, and hard to process. Barks thick mosses, and deep rooted spiked bushes cling to mountain sides and endure brutal temperatures.   The coasts offer some grass lands and florishing valleys that allow for more stable ecosystems with room for error among its population.

Localized Phenomena

Sliver of Divinity within the region are earned through bloodshed. Hunters, gladiators, bounty hunters, and the like will head here for a chance to gain divine power. The lands harsh landscapes are filled with large battlefields.

Natural Resources

Vast lumber, mineral, wildlife, and other basic resources are ripe for those willing to live in the cold secluded area.

History

Brutal conflicts surrounded the regions every corner. The Stalwold Straight has long been the only eastern hemispehere ocean travel method. Huge gangs of viking warriors have long rowed to attack trade vessels here. The Jewels of Eriar hire many of these same armies to protect the ships that pass through.
The region saw an explosion of refuguees during the third era when it was believed Thánatos "The Destroyer" would not cross the straight into the forest. These refugees now make up many different kingdoms in the region of violently different cultures. They warred with the viking clans of the south and the barbarian hoards of the north for their spots. They still do to this day. Thanatos in fact never crossed the strait. Many of the kingdoms there are some of the longest living ones ever known. Many scholars believe had they been focused on research they could have been magical power houses in the modern fourth era. Instead they are some of the best mercenary importers on the planet. Some of the most brutal effect adventerers come from the region as well such as the well known KFC party.
The battlefields here are long worn into the ground with many mountain valleys, plateus, rolling hills, marshes, and so on doubling as mass graves and 'holy sites' for the masters of war.

Tourism

Now that the destroyer no longer threatens the southern continent regular travel to the region is rare. Many adventerers head to the region in hopes of gaining quick slivers through combat. Those in search of the grandmasters of war's teachings also will head here to find a mentor.
Survivalists and home steaders are able to carve out isolated cabins in the harsh but well resourced region as well. The nothern isolated nature of the area provides a great escape from the complex and advanced civilizations of the southern continent.
