Session 42: The Worm Turns

General Summary

After a somewhat extended hiatus, game has returned! This time, each player is armed with a free "success" in an endeavor that normally would not work. Additionally, since everyone voted, the kind and gracious DM Tymora, the goddess of Luck, allowed each player to choose: once during the game, a player can choose to draw a card from the Deck of Many Things as a free action. Alternatively, if two players give up their draw, they may force an enemy to do the same. Obviously the sorcerers immediately drew cards. Emelia drew Euryale and was cursed with a -2 to all saves. Only a god or the magic of the Fates card can end this curse. Calloway fared better, drawing the Weaver, an unsual card that allows them to decide the fate of any character in the game. They cannot choose how or when this fate comes to pass, but it is certain to occur. Calloway has not yet chosen the target of this boon.
Khalog and Leshui returned with a coterie of bedraggled Agaricans and final preparations were made. The group traveled about an hour through Dominhall's secret tunnel before breaching a thin membrane that separated the relatively pleasant fecundity of the Acropolis and the oppressively muggy and rank atmosphere at the Mycotic Nexus. Seeing an illusory wall that obscured their entryway, Emelia lit the Candle of Invocation, opening a 25-foot-wide Gate to the Material Plane.
Klaus returned to Port Shimmerly bearing his father after a tearful goodbye and good luck. He and the Agaricans were welcomed by Henrietta, who led them to the Lodge for the time being.
At the same time, a huge group of allies joined our heroes:
  • Captain Sultana Sultana and his ragtag Brick Division
  • Captain Caydense Caydense and the effective Chelu-kaan rangers and members of the Bush Division
  • Gherd and the well-trained rogues in the Wayside Division, including our very own burly bugbear, Foggy!
  • A host of Triton warriors, presumably sent to the fray by Kopala Araumi
  • Eidella Montgomery, in a mech suit and joined by constructs and Glis
  • Gern Tos and his son, Gerry
  • Sid Vicious, toting an array of taxidermic chemicals
  • D. I. Furnace, with bardic magic
  • Treants from Lient’roc, friends of Calloway
  • Tea’Suah, the ancient three-headed Catoblepas who protects the forest

  • After being commissioned as Lieutenants and making final preparations, the group led the charge into the Nexus, a huge room with a fleshy bloom trapping Jaysennia Amanita at the center.
The great Annelidophyte worm had sensed the heroes' approach and prepared to confront them directly. Emelia became invisible and began to enact her plan... of sticking an Immovable Rod inside the creature's guts. And there she remains, a result of a somewhat unforunate Lair Action that halved everyone's movement. Leaf has been working hard for three rounds or so to start the ritual, and would have done so if it weren't for a Dissonant Whispers that forced him to flee. Padme delivered a clutch healing potion to TA-2, who had been felled by a burst of necrosis from the worm. Calloway wallopped the worm with a Chaos Orb that had the charming side effect of having them grow another 8 inches. SNTR-1 dealt consistent damage and managed to keep himself from being grappled and swallowed by the worm, which was looking grazed at the end of session. (Emelia can thank SNTR-1 for a little extra bit of damage from a well-aimed Trebuchet).
As for the NPCs and mooks, nothing terrible and nothing wonderful has happened. But I'll tell you about it anyway.
  • Gherd & the Wayside Division are doing poorly, but not dead yet.
  • Gern Tos and Gerry struck down the Somniophyte that Gherd had let through the ranks.
  • Furn escapes but has been unable to lend much strength so far.
  • TLDR:

All the pieces come together. The Agaricans move to the Material Plane and the militia of Port Shimmerly (with some added allies) join the Coast Guard for the final fight. A worm nearly breaks Emelia's mind. Leaf almost starts the Ritual.

    Bookkeeping:

  • In-Game Date: Unclear. Time's weird right now.
  • Emelia is currently inside the Annelidophyte.
  • I have a floating Wild Surge for Calloway.
  • Leaf must maintain his concentration until the beginning of his next turn.
  • Report Date
    18 Nov 2024
