How do the smugglers move around?

We don't know how the smugglers didn't cross us when leaving the Smuggler's Cave. Will we ever?

Current ideas
Secret passage - Upon inspecting there was no other way out of the cave. Plus if it was a hidden door it would likely have exploded. This doesn't seem to fit.
Underwater travelling - Maybe they had developed a method to travel underwater:

[Gilliweed] = seems unlikely as it is expensive and hard to get in our area

a spell to allow breathing underwater

a potion of waterbreathing

According to Bree 's statement, the smugglers make use of her potions of waterbreathing.
