The Great Elven Houses of Dungol Forest

The foundation of elven society in Dungol Forest lies in the Great Houses. These are more than just extended families; they are complex social structures that blend lineage, tradition, and shared purpose. While each house originally stemmed from a single family line, over generations they have grown to encompass numerous families, some related by blood, others joined through acceptance or alliance. This evolution mirrors the clan systems of the dwarves, creating strong bonds of loyalty and shared identity. While marriage between members of different houses is not forbidden, the strongest ties often remain within the house, shaping social interactions and political alliances. The degree to which a house welcomes outsiders varies considerably; some are open and inclusive, while others maintain a strict separation, preserving their unique traditions and lineage.   A short list of The Great Elven Houses:

  • Weaknesses: Their adherence to tradition can sometimes make them slow to adapt to changing circumstances. They are also vulnerable to political manipulation, as demonstrated by McNaird's successful coup. The loss of their royal status has significantly weakened their direct power, and they are now scattered and vulnerable to persecution.
  • History: The royal house, descended from the First King of Dungol Forest, Matthias Flodamiel. They led the elves through the reconstruction period after the Subjugation Wars, establishing a stable and prosperous kingdom. Their reign was marked by peace and relative harmony within Dungol. However, their rule ended abruptly with the rise of Danjel Jackson McNaird. McNaird, using his position within the King's court (having cleverly maneuvered himself from royal guard to clerk to influential advisor), exploited growing discontent among certain factions within the Kingdom. He used his knowledge of the court's inner workings and his cultivated network of allies to subtly fuel the flames of rebellion while maintaining a public image of loyalty. He likely played on fears of instability or economic hardship, promising greater stability and prosperity in a new form of government, the Free State. When the time was right, McNaird staged a swift and decisive coup, using his military connections to seize control of the royal palace and eliminate the last Flodamiel king and his loyalists. This act marked the violent transition from the Kingdom of Dungol to the Free State of Dungol, a change driven by McNaird's ambition. The remaining members of House Flodamiel were branded as enemies of the new state, forced into exile, placed under house arrest, or forced to publicly renounce their lineage to survive in the Free State or otherwise, murdered. The official narrative of the Free State, crafted by McNaird and his propagandists, portrays the monarchy as outdated and ineffective, justifying his establishment of the new regime and his own rise to power.
  • Current Standing: House Flodamiel is no longer the ruling house, and the very concept of a monarchy has been abolished by McNaird. Its members are either in exile, under close watch within Dungol, or have publicly renounced their lineage to avoid persecution in the Free State.
