Dun'Walis Tree

The Dun'Walis Tree is a magical and sacred tree in the heart of Dungol City. For ages it has been a meeting place for the Elves of Dungol Forest. A large shire has been built around it to protect it and its visitors. However, the Tree and the shrine are currently off-limits.
The immensely large Dun'Walis tree is a sure sight to see. It's trunk, with a circumference of 525 meters, is surely the largest known in all of recorded history. And the powers it grants its users is unbelievable. Truly a living relic from the past.   - Mattrick Zaffenborgjo

Purpose / Function

The Dun'Walis Tree is deeply connected to the life force of Dungol Forest. Some believe that the tree's health reflects the health of the forest as a whole. If the tree weakens, the forest weakens.   A Source of Wisdom:  The elves believe that the Dun'Walis Tree possesses ancient wisdom and knowledge. Those who commune with the tree, may receive visions, insights, or guidance. However, the tree's wisdom is often cryptic and requires careful interpretation.

Architecture

Size and Scale:  The Dun'Walis Tree is undeniably immense. Its trunk, boasting a circumference of 525 meters (as noted by Mattrick Zaffenborgjo), makes it the largest known tree in recorded history. Its canopy stretches outwards like a verdant dome, providing shade for a vast area within the shire. From a distance, the tree's crown can be seen rising above the city, a beacon visible throughout Dungol Forest.   Appearance:  The tree's bark is ancient and gnarled, covered in moss and lichen, each marking a testament to the long years it has stood. Its leaves, a vibrant emerald green tinged with gold, shimmer and rustle even in the slightest breeze, creating a soothing and almost whispering sound. Some elves believe the gold tinge intensifies during times of peace and fades during periods of strife. The wood itself is said to be incredibly strong and resilient.

Defenses

The Dun'Walis Tree, while a place of peace and wisdom, is also a site of immense importance to the elves, making its defense a paramount concern.   The Walls: The high walls surrounding the shire are not merely decorative. They are constructed from a combination of polished white stone (providing physical protection) and living wood (incorporating natural defenses). Perhaps the wood is magically reinforced, or thorny vines grow along the walls, creating a natural barrier. The walls could also be patrolled by elven guards.   The Guardians:  A dedicated group of elven warriors, known as the "Guardians of the Dun'Walis," are permanently stationed at the shire. They are chosen for their loyalty, skill, and deep respect for the tree. They are not just guards; they are also caretakers, responsible for maintaining the shire and ensuring the tree's well-being.

History

There are several legends as to how the great tree came into existence:   In the ancient days, when the world was young, the gods looked upon the elves with favor. They gifted them with a seed of immense power, a seed that would grow into a tree of unparalleled size and wisdom. This seed was planted in the heart of what would become Dungol Forest, and from it sprang the Dun'Walis Tree.   Other legends speak of a World Tree, a colossal tree that connects all realms of existence. A single seed, carried on the winds of fate, fell from this World Tree and took root in Dungol Forest. This seed became the Dun'Walis Tree, a smaller reflection of the grander cosmic tree.   Or, in a time of great peril, when the elves faced a dire situation, a noble elven queen sacrificed herself to the earth. From the spot where she fell, the Dun'Walis Tree grew, embodying her strength, wisdom, and sacrifice.
